CONSTITUTION OF JAMAICA

1 PROPOSED CHANGE REJECTED (Rec. November 18, 8.25 p.m.) Kingston (Jamaica), Nov. 17. Elected and official members of the Legislative Council rejected a proposed change in the Jamaican Constitution, offered by the British Government, that elected members should have a permanent majority in the Council, with ’the appointment of five members by the Government and Executive Council. It is asserted that the proposed change would be a retrograde step, likely’ to lead to a, purely Crown Colony. The fear is expressed that successive Governors might exercise over-riding power in certain matters and be supported by the Colonial Office.
