UPPER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Upper Hutt County Council on Tuesday was attended by the Mayor (Mr. A. J. McCurdy), and Councillors J. M. Beecliy, J. K. Johnston, W. Greig, J. Blewman, A. Howell, C. L. A. Spearman, and T. R. Jameson.

The council decided, in reply to an inquiry from the Department of Agriculture. to notify the Department that it did not intend to recommend another employee for appointment as an inspector under the Noxious Weeds Act tn place of the Upper Hutt Town Clerk (Mr. L. F. Grimestone). . The Hutt County Council advised that a petition from the electors of the Silvorstream portion of the West Ward had been presented to the Governor-General, praying that all the lands comprised in the present borough from its south-west boundary to Sutherland Avenue be excluded from the borough and included in the county of Hutt. The petition had been presented before the taking of the loan poll in connection with the proposal to reticulate and supply water to the area mentioned, and therefore it was requested that the council take the fact into consideration when making any commitments in respect of the proposed works.

The Upper Hutt and District Horticultural Society was granted the use rf the council rooms for the purpose of committee meetings during the season. Mr. D. Budge wrote bringing to the council’s notice' the nuisance caused ip Pine Avenue by wandering stock. He stated that frequently it was almost impossible to get along the footpath clean shod. Fences were being continually broken down and hedges destroyed. He had mentioned the matter to the town clerk, and the latter had replied to the effect that the owners of some of the cattle mentioned were privileged, and did not come tinder the heading of ordinary citizens. The town clerk stated that he had said the council was determined to a stop to the nuisance, and be had instructed the ranger to treat these wandering nnimals the same as any other citizens’ cattle. He had witnesses who eonld prove these statements. The council decided to refer the letter to the PublicServices Committee to report.
