WANGANUI NOTES
Dominion Special. Wanganui, November 17. The Wanganui Automobile Association decided to write to the Patea County Council drawing attention to the number of accidents that had occurred on the dangerous corner on the Waitotara Hill, and offering to assist in providing danger signs. Mr. Avlmer pointed out that there was a very dangerous and narrow corner ou the hill the other side of Turakina oti the Turakina-Bulls Road, and it was resolved that the secretary write to the Rangitikei County Council suggesting that the road be widened at that point. It was stated at the Hospital Board meeting to-day that there was a daily average of 118 patients in the hospital last month. This, the chairman Said, was the lowest number in the hospital for many years, and it was an indication that there was not much in the district at present A member suggested that the expenditure should have fallen with the number of patients in the institution. The chairman said that they would have to think seriously of reducing the staff if the cost of upkeep increased. Shipping was. delayed to-day, the river entrance being unworkable owing to the severe’westerly gale. The steamer Breeze, which lay out in the roadstead all day received a severe buffeting. At the Citv Council meeting the Mayor (Mr. Hope Gibbons) congratulated the assistant engineer, Mr. E. Gutnbley, on his appointment as engineer at Invercargill, and said he had rendered yeoman service to the city. Mr. Gumblev was the guest at several private farewell gatherings. He was presented with a travelling rug by the staffs, the Town Clerk’s office, and the engineering staff. He leaves tomorrow for Invercargill. The Citv Council decided to call applications for assistant-engineer. A vigorous protest against the Daylight Saving Bill was made at to-day’s meeting of the Wangnntii Farmers’ Union bv Mr. Gregor McGregor.
