PAHIATUA NOTES

Dominion Special. Pahiatua, November 17. A boiling down and tallow shed, adjoining the slaughter-house of Messrs. Harrison aud Co., butchers, was destroyed by fire yesterday morning. The building had not long been erected, and had concrete foundations and walls. A strong wind blowing at the time of the conflagration assisted the flames in the direction of a hide, skin, and salt house, which was completely destroyed, the skins and hides in the wooden structure being valued at'£‘2oo. Several cords of wood were also consumed by the flames. The W.F.C.A. owned the buildings aud plant, which were . insured in the office of the South British Insurance Company. The Dannevirke Bowling Club has challenged the local club for the Oxley Cup. The match is being played this afternoon, and each club will be represented by two rinks. ' Woodville has also challenged Pahiatua for the "Stars.” Great interest is being manifested in both matches. Notwithstanding the recent rains the green is in good order, and drawing well. There was a very large gathering at Mrs. Goodwin’s rooms last night, where a euchre tournament was held in aid of the Catholic Presbytery fund. Thirteen games were played, Mrs. P. J. Moran winning the lady’s prize, while the gentleman’s trophy went to Mr. F. P. Duffv. Consolation awards were won by Mrs. J. Harris and Mr. J. Wiblin.

The business people have unanimously decided to change the date of the "Shopping and Carnival Week” from the middle of January, as originally intended, to the following month. In addressing his congregation on Sunday, the Rev. Father Cashman said that the present method of raising mopey for the presbytery fund by means of euchre tournaments and dances was not satisfactory, and he intended in the very near future to conduct a queen carnival for that object, when, added the reverend gentleman, he honed a substantial sum would be collected.
