WINTON MEETING
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By
“The Watcher.”)
Nominations for all events at the summer meeting of the Woodville District Jockey Club will close on Friday at Si p.pi. The Woodville telegraph office closes at 8 p m. The Wahine brought 32 horses up from the south yesterday, the majority being competitors at the recent C.J.C. meeting. North Island horses won It races at Riccarton. and South Islanders 15. Of the latter total Riccarton stables claimed 11. , A The stock of Quirt Abbey, who dropped dead a day or two ago, won £82,135 in stakes during the last eight seasons. Originally imported by Messrs Potts Bros., he was acquired by Mr, R. Hannon about nine years ago. The Qum Abbevs, in addition to being good performers on the flat, made most efficient jumpers. . The Paper filly Chips, who won a double at the Waikato meeting, was purchased at auction as a yearling by Mr. J. A. Taylor, of Wellington, for 125gns. Lvsander has incurred a 101 b. penalty for the Feilding Stakes, and will carry 8.12 if he starts. A Press Association telegram from Hawera states that the stallion Bisogne dropped dead yesterday morning. He was not insured. ■ Bisogne was a chestnut horse foaled in 1912, by Bezonian from St. Evangeline, a Hotchkiss mare front the Pulchra family. He was bred by Mr. G. F. Moore, but was raced by Mr. A.. Alexander. He was a very speedy horse, and in 1916 won the Auckland Railway Handicap. He sired some useful stock in Taranaki, the best known of them being Avola, Glengariff, Benzora, and Bonogne. ■ Overdrawn, the winner of the Winton Cup yesterday, shaped very consistently against stronger company at Riccarton, running third in the New Zealand Cup and third in the Metropolitan Handicap. Mr. L. C. Hazlett’s other Paper Money (Circulation) also raced well, and with the assistance of a stronger horseman than L. J. Ellis should soon be a winner in the south. 'Black Ada is proving a remarkably good brood mare. So far she is represented by Novar, Clandhu, Clarinda and Piuthair, all good winners. Mr. R. A. McKenzie has a two-year-old colt from her by Absurd of whom he thinks very highly. The youngster recently suffered from a cold and was turned out, but T, Lloyd was to take him in hand again on his return from Riccarton. Black Ada is now on a -visit to Tea Tray. The New Zealand Cup winner Sunart, who had to be put aside owing to unsoundness, is again in active commission. Prior to the Stead. Gold Cup Rapine, Reremoana, and Grand Knight had met on two occasions. In the Awapuni Gold Cup Rapine beat Reremoana and Grand Knight, and in the Ormond Gold Cup Reremoana beat Rapine and Grand Knight. The form between these horses worked out well again over a mile and a quarter on Saturday when Rapine finished in front of Grand Knight and Reremoana. Rapine has now . won £18,395 in stakes, so that all going well he is in a good position to place himself amongst those who have won £20,000. This is a fine record for a horse who was able to do no racing at all when five years, which might have been his best season. 'According to a report from Christchurch, Fresco may do his Christmas racing at Awapuni. R., J. Mackie has accepted a second 'retainer to do the riding for Mr. E. L. Riddifqrd for the balance of the season. The first call on his services is held by Mr. W- R. Kemball. Margaret'Birney was one of the disappointments of the Riccarton carnival. The locallv-trained mare had been galloping well before the meeting opened (says the Christchurch “Star”), but she failed to show up in her races. Her form Was not right, as she will show later in the season.' Mr. C. E. Elgar was the most unlucky owner who was represented at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. He had three horses racing, and their form was decidedly tantalising. Licinius was second in the Stewards’ Handicap and Criterion Handicap; David Garrick was third in the Springy Plate, third in the Derby and second'in. the Seymour Handicap; and Lucky T>ays wa’s third in the Linwood Handicap. They thus secured £790 in place nfoney, without winning a race Still the improvement in their form, particularly the coming-on of David Garrick would be very pleasing to Mr. Elgar, who unfortunately was confined to his bed during the course of the meeting. , , , Work on the Hawera tracks has been vcrv quiet latelv, only the sand track being used Until recently? when . the plough was open (says an exchange). Gaillard and Silver Mine went three furlongs, finishing together in 38scc. Rehutai has started work and never looked better, being big in condition and hitting out freely. Rehutai (Morrison) led' Shut- Eye (Cochrane) oyer four fences, the grev mare, jumping perfectly and Shut Eye jumping slowlv and surely; Benzora, Bonogne, and Subjection finished in that order over three furlongs on Thursday morning in 37isec.—a good gallop. R. Brough s team, under the head lad, C. Cochrane, are all doing strong work. San Fera, who showed treat promise of being a first-class hurdle horse, has now become affected in the wind. Nothing works better on the track than Gold Collector. Bisox hit out freelv over half a mile in 50sec. Partaga is working very freely. He races at Ashhurst first. Killoch jumped once round oyer hurdles on Thursday morning and shaped well. When Killashandra went to Sydney from New Zealand in 1923 to race m 14.2 events on unregistered tracks, a bright future was forecasted for him. Unfortunately, however, the gelding after winning two races with over 9.0 in the saddle, fractured a leg while executing a trial at Moorefield, and it was feared that his racing days were over. The son of Kilbroney’s injury yielded wonderfully to treatment, So much so that an attempt is being made to get another race out of him. At the Newmarket October sales Mr. George Gould, of Christchurch, purchased a brown colt by Honey Bee from Crimson. The youngster is due here in a few weeks’ time. With four wins down to the credit of Master Doon this season, the Luctillus gelding is repaving bis owner-trainer,
D. P. Moraghan, in something like handsome style for past disappointments. At Ellerslie in the summer of 1924-25 fout hard races were exacted from ’Master Doon and he lost form subsequently to such a marked degree that he was counted out in many quarters. His owner, however, never despaired of getting the son of Lucullus back to form, and, as the bay gelding has won stakes to the value of £1875 since the present season commenced that is a very satisfactory return. The Paper Money gelding Forgery continues to do well on Sydney pony courses. Following on several wins in 14.1 class, he registered a brilliant performance when lie won a 14.2 race at Victoria Park recently, A Sydney writer has the following high praise for Forgery“ There is no doubt Forgery is one of the best 14.1 ponies that has graced a Sydney pony track. His record amongst his own class puts him on a pedestal. He lias several times suffered defeat in 14.1 company since coming from New Zealand, but, with one exception, those defeats have been most unfortunate. The exception was at Kensington on September 29.- when, starting favourite for the first division of the 14.1 Handicap, he failed to finish in the first six, after holding a prominent position at the home turn. However, to show how wrong that form was, the little bay at his next start, in similar company, won easing up by three and a half lengths. After that win it did not occasion surprise when his -owner accepted with him in the first division of a 14.2 race at Victoria Park. As he won that race with ridiculous ease, it is not improbable Skelton will try at even higher game.” London papers to hand bring full details of the race for the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, in which the Ascot Gold Cup winner Solario met with defeat under sensational circumstances. Solario, who carried the colours of Sir John Rutherford, was considered to be so superior to his opponents that odds of 3 to 1 were laid on his abilitv to win. The upshot of an exciting finish was a victory for Foxlaw who beat the favourite by a neck. 'The mattertdid not, however, end there. R. Jones, who rode the third horse, Foliation, lodged an objection against Faxlaw and Solario on the grounds of bumping and boring. The stewards, however, held that onlv Solario was to blame, and the favourite was disqualified for a place. Foxlaw, who is owned by Sir Abe Bailev, hailed from the same stable as Solario, and his victory was of the sensational order, for he was allowed to go out at a long price. Solario’s racing career, it is stated, ended with the Jockey Club Stakes. A recent cablegram from London gave the result of a match at Newburv between the French-bred colt Highborn 11. (by St. Just) and the English-bred horse Oojah (by Bachelor’s Double), in which the former scored an easy victorv. Highborn 11. is a three-vear-old, while his rival is a year older. When Highborn 11. won his first race in England—the Fernhill Stakes at Ascot—he ran m the nomination of the French sportsman M. E. Esmond, who subsequentlv sold the colt to Sir H.. Cunhffe Owen for, it is said, 4000 guineas. In the decision of the King George Stakes at Goodwood, Oojah (9.2) defeated Highborn 11. (9.4) bv half a length. The recent match at Newbury between the pair was probably the outcome of the race at Goodwood. WINTON MEETING OVERDRAWN WINS CUP (Jy TE'iEGBAPH. —PBESS ASSOCIATION. Invercargill, November 17.
