ROYAL SHOW

OPENED BY GOVERNORGENERAL STOCK DISPLAY EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS t = FIRST DAY’S AWARDS r Dominion Special. - Auckland, November IG. ; Auckland's first Loyal show opened today in a howling gale wit|i occasional heavy showers, m consequence attendance was small. The Governor-General tormally opened the siiow. Speaking at' the official luncheon, Mr. W. Perry (president ot the Royal Agricultural Society) said that they had there to-day a very fine display of stock which tar exceeded the anticipations of the society when it decided upou Auckland for this Royal show. He bad no hesitation in declaring that they had there what was probably the finest display of dairy stock in the Southern Hemisphere and certainly the finest that had ever been shown in New Zealand. The sheep display was also remarkably fine and larger than had been thought would be the case, the Southdowns being especially good. The entries in the fat sheep section were a record. The southern competitors were too few, but the chief reason for this was the heavy transport charges, which was one of the chief difficulties that had to be contended with. "The town and trade of Auckland,” was proposed by the Hon. A. D. McLeod (Minister of Lands) in the absence of the Mayor of Wellington. Mr. McLeod said that lie believed that primary industries and secondary industries should go hand in hand. They had a fine city in Auckland, a remarkably fine city, and if it continued to prosper at the rate it did—well, in a few yeprs it would cateli up to Wellington. (Loud laughter ■ii I applause). In replying, the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, assured Mr. McLeod amid renewed laughter that Auckland was a long way ahead of Wellington. He understood , that there had been some difficulty in 'getting the consent of the people of the south to the holding of the Royal show in Auckland, for they apparently had an idea that we could not grow cattle and sheep and such things up here. He hoped that many of the prizes would remain here so that people of the south would realise that we did have some farmers, and good farmers too, about Auckland. (Applause). Mr. F. A. Hellaby (president of tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce) also responded. The Governor-General proposed: "The Agriculture of New Zealand ” He made reference to the value of holding Royal shows in different centres. It was not only for the improvement of stock that shows were beneficial, for these shows had resulted in bringing about great improvements to agricultural machinery. Such shows also did much to stimulate efforts to help in the progress of the country. They pointed to the enormous importance of importing the very finest breeding stock to make for higher production and to the furtherance of scientific study and experiment for the general improvement of agriculture. Science had done much for these industries in the past and could do much for them in future. Other countries, having a great pull over New Zealand geographically, were far ahead of us in scientific farming knowledge and if New Zealand wished to get ahead in the race for the world’s markets it would have to catch up in the matter of scientific education. He wished the greatest success to agriculture in New Zealand and hoped that this Royal show would do iiinr-b to advance it. (Applause.) The provincial group competition for seven pedigree Friesian cattle resulted: Auckland No. I, 1: Auckland No. 2,2; Wellington No. 1,3; Taranaki, 4. CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS B?
