LAWN TENNIS
"Away back in tho early months of 1925, states tha first annual review of the Hutt Valley Junior Lawn Tennis Association, “a Hutt Valley Association was suggested by several enthusiasts, the result being that the Western Hutt Tennis Club convened a meeting of representatives of all clubs with a view to the formation of same. At this meeting a committee consisting of Messrs. G. Barry (Catholic), N. Hayes (Methodist), 1. Jones (Eastern Hutt), with A. Smith (Eastern Hutt) as chairman and R. D. Smith (Western Hutt) as secretary, were instructed to arrange for a tournament to be held in Easte of that vear. Unfortunately the matches on faster Saturday had to be abandoned, but Easter Monday was treated to better weather, with the result that in the senior games Eastern Hutt defeated Methodist and Western Hutt defeated Petono Central. In the junior games Eastern Hutt and Methodist wou through to the finals, and these teams together with Eastern Hutt and Western Hutt (tho senior finalists) contested their respective championship honours, with the result that the first champions of the association were Western Hutt, senior, and Eastern Hutt, junior. "Greatly encouraged by the success of its first venture, the association embarked on a more progre-sive policy, and the committee was increased so ■ that each club belonging to the association bad two representatives. Those appointed were as follow Messrs. P. Hazelwood and L. Prior (Church of Christ); W. Watkinson and Uren (Petone Central); A. Flux and F. Davis (KoroKoro); 11. Smith and J. Hector (Western Hutt); S. Potts and N. Heyes, secretary (Methodist); A. Smith and I. Jones, chairman (Eastern Hutt). On January 11, 1926, Mr. Heyes resigned, and Mr. I. Jones was appointed to the position with Mr. F. Davis as cluiirpian. October 31, 1925, then played an important, part jn the association's history, for on that day the first of tho ever-popular interdull matches was played. So many were the pleasures, so great the encounters, so wonderful the weather, and so keen the enthusiasts that it is impossible to find space to record each and every happening." The "Review,” which is nicely got up, contains a full li>t of the competitions held under the auspices of tho association during the year, and some valuable hints to players.
