COST OF CRICKET
INCREASED CHARGES AT BASIN RESERVE CLUBS FEELING THE HNCH A deputation from the cricket clubs Tiding the Basin Reserve—Wellington, Midland, Old Boys, Y.M.C.A., and In-stitute-waited upon the Management Committee of the Wellington Cricket Association last night in older to see if the charges for practice wickets and dressing rooms could not bo reduced. Mr. W. A. Parton (Institute), who acted as spokesman, pointed out that the charge for practice wickets had been raised from £3 3s. to £6 6s. The increased charges, he said, were another load round the necks of those running the clubs. Cricket was an. expensive game, and unless it was absolutely necessary he hoped the committee would be able to see their way to redqce the eharges. In addition to the additional iOO per cent, for practice wickets, the Slubs using the Basin had to pay in extra .810 for dressing-rooms. Plubs not using the Basin had nothing to pay for dressing-rooms. Clubs could not very well raise their subscriptions. Referring to ground fees, tlie speaker Said that the Institute Club had lost a jood deal of money last season through hot knowing that a rebate was allowed if notice was given before Wednesday in lack week of all games that were not joing to be played. . Mr. W. A. Baker, captain of the Midland Club, said that tho present charges At the Basin Reserve worked out at ibout 10s. per player, which left very little for material. They thought that the 100 per cent, which had been put on for practice wickets was a bit too strong. In reply to Mr. W. J. Christopherson. Mr. Baker said the Midland Club had collected .£74 12s. last season, of which they had to pay A 261 to the Cricket Association. The Midland Club charged Ills, for senior playe'rs, 275. 6d. for juniors, and £1 for third grade players ■This did not include ground fees. ' Mr. C. G. Wilson: You i.re probably the cheapest club in Wellington. Mr. Baker: Probably so, but we find it difficult enough to collect the subscriptions at the present rates. The question of payment if ground fees for matches which had been forfeited was raised, and Mr. D. McKenzie said that if club secretaries were to advise the association of the results of matches each week it would save sub-committees of the association a great deal of trouble. Mr. Wilson explained that the charge of £lO for the dressing-rooms was made by the City Council and had nothing whatever to do with the association. The association wished to make cricket as cheap as possible, and they would take the finances of the clubs into consideration. The points raised by the deputation would be carefully considered. There was no club question about it at all. Mr. Parton said he knew that the Management Committee of the Wellington Association always had the good of cricket at heart. Tie had served, on the association on two different occasions and knew from experience that they were by no means one-eyed. The deputation left their case confidently in the committee’s hands.
