ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT.

The annual smoke concert of the Electrical Workers’ Union was held on Saturday night. Mr. Matthews presiding. In’proposing "The Electrical Trade, the chairman . said that while m 1920 eleven million units of electricity were used in the citv of Auckland the consumption for 1926 was sixyt-four and a quarter millions. Following on the previous speaker’s remarks. Mr. Laughland spoke of the wonderful strides electricity had made in this country since 1888.. when the hydro-electric plant then used had to bo turned off whenever a fire occurred. so that the hrigadesmen could use the water for their hoses. In Canada, he said, they have a system of "standard electric homes.” These places were all electrically fitted, and had a red seal on them so that the householder knew that fittings used by him in one "-tandard electric home’ would do in liny other "standard home. ’ The advantages of such a system were obvious. and it would be a good thing to have introduced to New Zealand. A number of other toasts were honoured with enthusiasm.
