KAIWAI COMMITTED FOR TRIAL BY Telegraph.—press association. Gisborne, November 13. At Ruatoria, Noema Kaiwai was charged with the attempted murder of Thomas Joyce Evidence was given by Thomas Joyce that he was suddenly confronted by Kaiwai, who fired point-blank at him with a shotgun. He immediately ducked, but received some of the charge in the back.. He then dodged into manuka scrub, and Kaiwai fired again, but missed. He then rushed Kaiwai and tried to get the gun, and accused' tried to strike him with the butt. JoyT’e managed to get the'gun, and then rolled .down a bank, Kaiwai running away. ' 'Other witnesses stated that shots were heard, and that the girl with whom Kaiwai had been living called out to the. accused to go inside. When he didn’t .do so. she took him away. Kaiwai, it was stated, admitted he had fired two shots at Joyce. •
Formal evidence was given by several witnesses, identifying the gun and ammunition.. Witnesses stated that Kaiwai had borrowed the gun earlier in the evening, stating he wanted to go duck-shooting. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. ' : ■
