SYDNEY STREET CHAPEL
‘‘NOT THE ORIGINAL
BUILDING”
The . Health Committee reported to the city Council on Thursday that thev had appointed the chairman (Councillor Troup), Councillor Burns and Mr. W. A. Edwards (Early Settlers’ Association) as the committee to control the Bolton Street Cemetery and Chapel on the lines already approved bv the council. Councillor H..-D. ..’Bennett raised tlie point about the presentation of this building. He had made, -inquiries from the Church of England authorities and from 'thrim ascertained that the building on., which so much sentiment had been expended wds really attachable to a building not now in existence. He 'hated to upset tlie feelings of those who had a respect for the building. When the subject was being discussed he’ asked why the Church, cf England authorities were not taking part in ■the matter, andwas informed that "they did ; not want'to have mything .to : do with it as the building had no historical value, as it was not the original building, --but- was a wing which had been added to the original building, which had long since disappeared. ■ . U Councillor. G. A. Troup mentioned that Mr. W A. Edwards, of the Early Settlers’ and Historical Association,' knew the facts as Mr. ’ Refin'ett” knew them, and yet thev were prepared to do something towards the preservation of the old building. In any case, he Hiought it " was too late to do anything in the matter, and he reminded the council that the association might be very useful when at any time in the future thev might wish to do something with the cemetery. The clause was adopted.
