-. The affray at Ruatoria is alleged to have been caused ?> by the jealousy of the two men over a woman.. It is alleged that Kaiwai, when Joyce’ was behind the- stables only a few paces away; ; pointed the -gun at. him-.. and fired ; at. point-blank range; .. ■ At=. the first shot Joyce flung himself... to ■. the. ground, and-then, as’ tte assailant was. about to’ fire 1 againi- dodge’d’- belrtfid' sortie, manuka siriib. ' ./Joyce- then rushed -his assailant, but was . overcome';'by toss of bloCxd, and .fell into the scrub; and the other man went away. It is . also alleged that Kaiwai borrowed the gun a few hours before, stating that lie wanted it for duckshootitig. The injured man was taken to the hospital, and four pellets were removed from his back.
