THE RACING WORLD

LAST DAY OF C.J.C, MEETING CBy Telegraph—From "Thj Watcher.”; Christchurch, November 12. There was heavy rain here all day to-day, and form during the last three days may be upset to-morrow. However, the Riccarton track can stand a fairly good soaking. Form in the Suburban Handicap draws attention to Santiago, Revel, and Goosestep. One or two of the runners in the Cressy Welter Handicap claim subsequent engagements. Arpent and Nadarino, it is understood, will start in the Members’ Handicap. In their absence Mireusonta, Booster, and Volant may show up. There is a big field in the 4even-fur-long hack handicap. Vesperus, Bean Geste, and Prophet’s Mark may show up. In the Members’ Handicap form directs attention to Licinius. Nadarino and Arpent are to start in this race, and both should run well. In the two-year-old handicap form gives Roval Ceres a great chance, but in his absence Starlight may run well. There is every promise of a brilliant race in the Stead Gold Cup. Commendation will have plenty of supporters, and he should run a great race. Of the older horses Rapine may be most fancied, although Grand Knight, who sprinted five furlongs in 61sec. this morning, created a course record. There is every .prospect of a good contest in the three-year-old handicap. On form, Hynanna, Seatown, and Countersign should run well. The rain that has fallen seriously

affects the chances of Footfall and Claritjda, both of whom like hard tracks. ~ In the event of the track, being really soft Fresco and Full Swing must, be prominent. . s Vaward has been sold through the agency of Mr. T. S. Roulston to Mr. J. M. Samson, of Dunedin. ’ F. D. jones is expected to arrive home from Melbourne next week, with Limerick under his care. ; According, to a Melbourne writer, Limerick used his split heel' very tenderly when he went out for tile Victoria Derby. He had bar shoes on both front feet, and the bad heel was tight- \ ly bound with adhesive plaster In the /'race he made a sharp run soon after entering the straight, and for a few . strides it looked as if he was going to .. be dangerous, but he had finished his

NOTES AND COMMENTS

run at the distance and only plugged on in third place. In describing the Melbourne Cup, a leading Australian writer said that Limerick hung on well and it was not until the turn that he dropped out. It is impossible to say how he would have shaped if he had not split his heel, but he would certainly have been much closer. His heel bled slightly during the race. I cannot say that I think the best horse at the weights won the. Melbourne Cup, writes “Cardigan,” in the “Australasian,” although I would like to be able to do so. I honestly think that if the race was run ten times Pantheon would win nine. The pace set by Comus upset all calculations, and Pike, undoubtedly one of the best riders in Australia, for once in a while made a mistake. Perhaps he was justified in making so much use of Pantheon, as he knew he was on a good horse, who was thoroughly fit, but if, and the “if” means everything in the Melbourne Cup, he had decided to wait until the half-mile before attempting to go after the leader, there is not the slightest doubt in my mind that he would have won. He did all the hard work and paced the field up to the runaway When he had beaten Comus he in turn stalled off The Banker and Roval Charter, but Spearfelt obtained the' last run, and it proved too good. Pike told me after the race that he considered, with Comus out of the race, he 'would have cantered in. McCarten, on The Banker, made the same mistake as Pike, being over-anxious. It is rather the irony 6f fate that the, pacemaker for The Banker should help to defeat him McCarten was quite frank about his mistaken tactics, and after the race he realised that if he had Waited his mount would have done better. He explained, and the explanation is more than feasible, that The Banker obtained an extraordinary rood run, slipping through on the rails all the. way along the river side, and only going, outside one horse in the course of the journey. “You would have thought it was made to order for me, the manner in which the horses in front pulled out,” said McCarten, “and I had no other option but to take advantage when it presented itself.” , , , • , Mr. A. B. Williams recently effected the purchase of a two-vear-old colt by He from Skv Dream, from the late Mr. J. C. N. Grigg’s Longbeach Stud. Sky Dream was acquired by Mr Grigg, with a foal at foot born in May of last year, and the youngster, although onlv 18 months old, ranks as a two-year-old as far as the New Zealand Turf is concerned. He is exceptionally well-grown for his age, and his future wijl be watched with interest. The youngster will accompany J. H. Jefferd’s team back to Hawke’s Bay from Riccarton. WAIKATO MEETING Dominion Special. Auckland, November 12. The Waikato Racing Club’s spring meeting will be opened to-morrow and indications are for fine weather. In the Waima Hurdles West Abbey, Pendennis and Kara may run prominently. A large field is engaged in the Inal Handicap and Bracken Abbey, Joy Germ, Bright Comet and Quondong may be well to the fore. In the Tamahere Stakes Paganellt, Auriculus and. Chips may form the favourite division. Nippy is not being sent to. the meeting, but his stable companion, Eden Hall, is, and will start in the Waikato Cup. Merry Day and Master Doon may run w'ell in this event. A fairly good field is engaged in the Claudelands Handicap and Royal Mint, Passionate and Wenday may be most in demand. In the Clarkin Steeplechase Prince Rufus, Pentagram and Hazelburn may perforjn well, provided Pendennis, who is in the Hurdles, is not reserved for this race. If lie is started he will' have some friends. Merry Damon, Kingfield. and Chairman should be prominent in the Cambridge Handicap. Tea Bell, who was an acceptor in this race is not going to the meeting. Tinokoa, one of R. Hannon’s team, Paddon and Nucleus should be well to the forej in the Hautapu Handicap.
