RECKLESS RIDING

HORSE COLLIDES WITH MOTORCAR.

George Reginald Malden. Hare was charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday with riding a horse in a. reckless manner, the offence alleged having been committed on Happy Valley Road, Island Bay, on Labour Day, when he collided with a motor-car at the corner of Beach Road, the horse suffering a broken leg and having to be destroyed. Mr. J. F. R. Wallace' appeared for Hare. Septimus Charles Knight, the driver of the car. gave evidence that defendant came riding towards hint with his head right down against the horse’s wither. He made to turn off the beach and collided with the front of witness’s car, smashing the radiator. The rider was thrown o'er the horse’s head, clear of tlie car, on to the road. The rider was on his wrong side. Witness also replied to Mr. Wallace that lie was.proceeding at the rate of ten or twelve miles per hour, and he was going to the races. The car was stationary before the horse hit it.

lan Goldwater and George Marlowe, witnesses of the accident, also gave evidence, Goldwater stating'that the horse had certainly not been ridden carefully. Constable Baker stated that ho had warned tho defendant on three previous occasions, and had received various complaints about his dangerous speed of riding. Mr. Wallace pointed out that Hare had already suffered through personal injury ami the loss of his horse, which lie valued at «£l5. but Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., said it was a very gross case. He convicted Hare and fined him =£3 and costs amounting to <£! 2s.
