SPIRITED ENCOUNTERS

Palmerston North, January 12.

The .Palmerston Tennis Club’s annual touriiev was continued to-day, but was interfered with by intermittent showers. Plav had to be abandoned late in the afternoon on account of the increasing downpour. A number of spirited encounters were witnessed amongst the leading contestants. The elimination rounds in the championships have now reached a most -interesting stage, many prominent players having to go down. Entwhistle, of Auckland, defeated Alilburn, of Hawke's Bay, and Malfroy beat Parker. For a youbtful plaver Alalfroy is showing remarkable skill and has justified tne hopes of those who consider him a forthcoming Dominion champion. Andrews, the local champion, was in good form. He succeeded in beating Louglman and he appears to have an excellent chance in tne finals. Following are the day’s results;— -MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES.
