WAIRARAPA NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Carterton. A. generous gift to the town for the amusement of the children was announced at the meeting of the Carterton Borough Council. A gentleman who did not desire to disclose his identity had placed with the council a cheque lor £232 to provide children’s playing apparatus for Carrington Bark. The equipment had been ordered, and would he to hand within three or four months. Tire only stipulation was that the borough boar the cost of erecting it. This the council unanimously decided to do, and accorded the donor a vote of thanks for his handsome gift. The apparatus will comprise see-saw (four boards), six swings, ocean wave, a 20-foot slide, and a log swing. The following nominations have been received for the Carterton School Committee:—Messrs. E. A. Croad, G. Dykes. L. J. Harding. W. L. Haste. J. IV. Henderson, A. C. Kennerley, A. C. Tucker, J. A. T. Stevens, and' O. W. Wilton. No election will lie necessary. A public call telephone office (coin-in-tlie-s'ol) is to be. installed in Carterton at an early date. Masterton. At the annual meeting of St. Matthew’s parish the following officers were elected:—Vicar’s warden, Dr. Archer Hosking: people’s warden. Mr. L. B. Maunsell; vestrymen. Messrs E. Hale, IV. Pennistone, J. T. Williams, T. T. Denbee, G. Ball. T. It. Bost, G. Hyde, W. McArtney, FL F. Green, and E. H. Morton. Messrs. H. M. Boddington and G. IV. Sellars were re-elected auditors. It was decided to make an effort this year to raise £2OO towards paying off the loan of £lBOO on the parish, hall. The Wairarapa Carriers’ Association has this year transported 60,000 sheep by motor lorry as compared with 30.000 last year. Tho Rev. J. 11. Datson, who recentlyresigned the charge of the Masterton Congregational Church after three years’ service, lias entered the Anglican ministry, and will be attached to St. Matthew’s parish at Masterton Association football clubs have been formed at Carterton and Martinborough, the result of which will be six teams in the senior competition, against four since the code was introduced to the Wairarapa three years ago. The Masterton Hosiery and Spinning Company has appointed a manager, and the erection of specially designed buildings -will be commenced shortly. It is anticipated that the company will be manufacturing goods within five months. The Railway Department has replied to a request from the Masterton Chamber of Commerce stating that chair seats are to bo installed in second-class ears on the Wairarapa line. The annual report of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. states that the membership for the year was 263, comprising 108 senior, 73 junior, and 84 sustaining members. Mr. IV. Iggulden, of Masterton, has returned frem Hawke’s Bay, where be has been carrying out a contract for the transport of store lambs from ,Pongaroa to Napier, a distance of ' 110 miles.
It was stated at a meeting in Masterton that forty-six boys could not be admitted to the Anglican Boys’ Home at Lower Hutt last year, owing to lack of accommodation. The committee of the Homo had promised £lOOO if a similar amount could be raised in tho Wairarapa. for the establishment of an auxiliary home in this district. The idea was to found a home for 20 or 25 boys over school age, the home to have mough land on which tc run 10 tows, and to give the boys something to do until they could be placed in suitable employment. At the annual meeting of the Y.M.C.A. the following directors was elected: —(Messrs. G. IV. Morice, G. Joy, J. Kitchen*!-, C. A. Hendry, S. P. Carr, J. H. Uandyside, A. H» Thomas, IV. Wilkinson, D. C. Clark, the Rev. IV. Beckett, J. H. Datson, J. Cocker, O. Gibson, and G. S. King. Tho Poppy Day appeal throughout the Wairarapa realised £lBO. In addition to this amount, the committee controlling the fund has £llO carried forward from last year and will be in a sound position io meet unemployment or distress among returned soldiers during the winter. Seventy shooting licenses were issued at Masterton for the season, which opened on May 1. The Wairarapa Lake has attracted largo numbers of sportsmen this season. Since the enactment of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1579 drivers’ licenses have “brnn issued in Masterton, 767 being in the borough, and 830 in the county. f The Wairarapa Provincial I’armers • Union is initiating a scheme for the export of pork. A guarantee of 2060 pigs annually from the Wairarapa will be required before tho schema can operate, as it means tho installation of special machinery at the works where the freezing arrangements have been offered. Tho pigs will be slaughtered here, frozen, and shipped Home either for sale as fresh pork, or for conversion into bacon over there. There is every prospect of the scheme being taken up by. those engaged in the industry. Advice has been received in Masterton that while proceeding through Turakina on the return to Masterton from a holiday in Taranaki a car conveying Mrs'. D. Donald, sen., and the Misses Morrison, of Lansdowne. t broke a spring, and fell over a bank. No serious injury occurred, but the ladies were admitted to the Marton Hospital suffering from abrasions and shock. At the annual meeting of the V airaj rapa branch of the Returned Soldiers Association, Mr. J. F. A. Hebenton, representative on the Claims Board of Wairarapa Patriotic Association, stated that the board had granted to date 431 loans, toalling .£71.915, and of this amount £40.270 had been repaid. Cash grants to soldiers totalled £26,300. Tho meeting elected the following officers:—Chairman, Dr. M. B. M- iweed (Carterton), re-elected); vice-chairman, Mr. T. A. Blake; lion, treasurer.
