CHESS

NORTH V. SOUTH The Wellington Chess League’s open-ing-of-season match between players residing in the northern half of Greater Wellington and those living in the southern half was concluded last week. The finish was exciting and the match ended in a tie, each side scoring 35 points (a full point was allowed for a win and half a point fur a draw). Tire almost entire absence of.one-sided games was a very gratifying feature of the contest, this being due to the fact that the pairing committee had, in advance, grouped all the known players into three divisions —A, B, and C —according to their estimated strength as disclosed by the matche records of tho various clubs. Owing, however, to lack of sufficient data, and to the fact that some of the provisional pairings had to ,be rearranged at short notice to suit players who had other engagements, the committee wish it to be understood that the score sheet, which is given below, is not to be regarded as showing the contestants in their order of playing strength. The number taking part. viz.. 141), is a record for Wellington, and probably for New Zealand. The outlook for chess in this city is very bright, and the Wellington Chess Club is entering on its jubilee year with good prospects. It may be added that the match just concluded is the fourth of its kind, and that South is “one up,” as follows:—
