BELT MATCHES COMMENCE SHOOTING CONDITIONS TRICKY DETAILS OF SATURDAY’S SHOOTING (From Our Special Reporter.) Trentham, May 2. Trentham was in tricky mood to-day for th; continuation of the N.R.A. meeting. Eearly in rhe morning the sky was heavily overcast, making the light dull and sighting difficult. Towards midd’-.y it lightened, and p.ntclies of sunshine prevailed As the light improved, however, the wind conditions got worse, and at times there was a mirage which caused trouble. On the whole the wind was from the left rear, 1 equiring •allowances averaging two to three left, but frequently it would suddenly whip in from the right, requiring as much as seven degrees on sights. Although 600 yards was the furthest distance fired, tliis variation was sufficient and rapid enough to . cause several ‘misses. After lunch the sky again became heavily overcast, and the light to commence was very thick. It lifted a little iatef on, but rain set in soon after 3 o’clock, and shooting for tlie day was abandoned. Fortunately it otdv interfered with the first stage (300yds.) of the next match, two Belt matches now being completed. The first range fired in the morning was 600vds., concluding the opening match, of which the two previous distances (300 and 500 yards) had been fired the previous dav. Wind conditions were not so difficult'early as they were later, and although no possibles were recorded, aggregates of 101 and 100 were obtained. The score of 101 was put up bv a South Island tyro, AV. J. Gibson, of Papakaiao. On Friday he had made 34 at 3()ovds. and 35 at 500yds. To-day lie added 32 to his overnight total, and was top scorer for the. match. Owing to’thc opening match prizes being confined to competitors in their respective grades, Gibson missed the A grade first prize of £5, and had to take the, first tyro prize. In the A. grade, J. C. Feast', of-Greytown, was on to)> with 100, his totals being 34, 33, 38. He was closely followed by his brother, IL W. Feast, who scored 98, and there were several 97’s. The conclusion of the opening match left the wav clear to commence the real business of the meeting—shooting (<>•■ the Ballinger Belt —and a start was made at the 500 yards distance of the Marlborough Match. Conditions were still variable, but on the whole good, with Treuth, uni’s occasional steady patches. The 500 yards distance is also an easy one, and some hot shooting tool: place. Possibles were recorded by P. B. Goldfinch (Old Navals) »>nd A- AAA Soix-r (Taumarunui), while H. 11. Donald (Opaki) got nine bulls and an inner, and AV. S. Mills (Kiwi) four bulls, an inner, and five bulls. C. J. Nix (Feather Mon also dropped only one point. This range, completed, the competitors moved back to 600 wards and fired the ten shots of the Canterbury Match It was here th: 4 trouble began, as the wind freshened, with strong gusts, and also changed its direction very suddenly. Hivti scores were not made, a 16 by AY 7 . N. Masefield (Marlborough) being on top. Masefield was i-'n early morning arrival, having been enabled, at the eleventh hour, to come to the meeting. Outers and even misses were a common feature of the scores. For instance, C. I’. Nix, who had just macle 49 at 500 cards, could get only 32, while J. C. Feast, the century maker in the opening match, got 36. AV. 11. Feast, a wellknown marksman, could register only 37. all on, but he is shooting this year much below his usual form. There were, however, several solid shots, who hung on well in the lower 40’s, and kept up good positions in the aggregate .After lunch the 300 yards distance of the Marlborough Match was fired. A poor light affected some shooters, but conditions generally were vastly iin'pioved on the morning, the wind having dropped to a gentle breeze, which was gradually dying. Some hot shooting took place, and possibles in quick succession were put on by Boon (Karori), .Tames (Napier), j. C. Feast (Grevtown), and Mills (Kiwi), while E. Ballinger (Petone) nine “bulls” and an inner, and H. Donald (Opaki) 49. -As Mills had put on 49 at the 500 yarejs. range he took the match with the splendid total of 99 out of a possible 100 points; while Donald, with his two 49’s, was only another point away. It was brilliant shooting. While shooting was m progress tlie firing points were visited by ,the Minister of Defence, Sir R Heaton Rhodes, who was attended bv Colonel Hughes, chief executive officer, and Mr. \V. Bellingham, secretary. Lady Rhodes will present the trophies and prizes ou. Wednesday afternoon. i Rifleman I’. B. ■ Goldfinch (Old Navals), who scored a possible at the .500 yards distance in the Marlborough Match, and is well up in the aggregates, was taken to the AY 7 clliiigton Hospital on Saturday night. Goldfinch was taken ill coining to the range, but lose at this period."* Karori lost Croxhe stuck out the day, and although feeling far from well he shot brilliantly. On returning home, however, he collapsed and was ordered to hospital bv tlie doctor. It is particularly hard hick that this should occur during the meeting when he is in such good form. It is a coincidence that two Wellington clubs, Old Navals .and Karori, should lose the services of their best shots at this period. Karori lost Croxton the previous week. Riflemen will be pleased to hear that the ex-champion is making satisfactory progress. . Monday will be a busv das’. A start will be made with the Auckland Match (300 and GOO yards), after which the Westland Match (500 and 600 yards) will be fired. This will complete the 1 rentham (short range) aggregate. It is also intended to complete the 800 yards distance of the first long-range match.
The statistical staff, tinder Captain Felton, is to be congratulated upon the prompt manner in which results are posted. Visitors to the camp who have inspected Captain Felton’s system state that it is unrivalled. During recent years postal arrangements in camp have been very convenient for competitors. This year, however, they find tlie camp office closed, and business has to be conducted at a store outside the camp gates, which now acts as the local post office. As there are now about 500 people in camp for the shooting, and from now onward there will be a considerable number of Territorial and other trainees in camp almost continuously, it would seem to be a good commercial proposition for the Postal Department to revert to liaving the office restored to its former locale.
