CHAMPIONSHIP POSITIONS SENIOR A DIVISION.
SENIOR A DIVISION HOSPITAL BEAT DIAMONDS. The return of Porteous as goalie and the inclusion of Pinion (captain of the Buller representatives) undoubtedly strengthened the Hospital team for their clash with Diamonds. Playing against a slight breeze, Hospital forwards at once made headway, but the movement was spoilt by Lambert being offside. Iho 'brothers McLeod removed play from the Diamond goal with nice footwork, but were driven back by Gibb, and Cutler was brought into play to clear a high dropping shot, and this he executedjncely. 'Bolt, Stocks, and Bing were prominent in a good run, which Porteous neutralised. A splendid rush by Hospital resulted almost in a goal. Two corners were awarded Hospital iu. quick succession, but nothing was gained. Fimon and McKee sent the Hospital, forwards away, and Lambert’s shot appeared to cross tlio goal-line when Cutler pushed it round the post f\r a corner. The home team was not to be denied, and a nice centre from Dick was sent in by Mullins. 1“'O. Diamonds tried hard to equalise, but their shooting was weak. The second hajf opened with fine concerted play by the Hospital forwards. Hughes sent Lambert and Mullins away, but Daniels, Reyling and Findlay played well in the danger zone, and then tested the Hospital defence, and it proved equal to the ’occasion. Diamonds livened up the play, Porteous having to leave his goal to stem n dangerous ru,sh, A hefty kick bp Thompson put Diamonds on the defensive, and Lambert and Dick both shot, Cutler stopping than, but Hughes dashed in at the last one and scored. 2—o. Hospital kept up the.' pressure, and a shot by Hughes struck the uprights. In the closing stages, Fimon received a cut on the head. Diamonds failed to open their account, and the game ended in a victory for Hospital by 2—o. Mr. Ormrod refereed. Y.M.C.A. OVERCOME THISTLE. 'Contrary to expectation, Thietle put up a poor showing against last year’s champions, Y.M.C.A. For nearly half of the first spell, when the. weather conditions were good. Y.M.C.A. battered the Thistle citadel, and finally blood was drawn. Eaton shot the ball against Duncan, who miskicked over his shoulder into his own goal—l—o. Y.M. kept up the attack. Thistle vainly endeavouring to remove the danger from their ground, their tactics in keeping only one back near their goal frequently giving offside relief. Eventually Ballard sent the ball in hard from’ the left after beating three opponents at close quarters and it travelled between Duncan’s legs into the ne f. o—O. Soon after the second spell started Wallace sent a long shot in from the right which dodged Tyrant and made the score 2—l. Y.M. renewed the offensive and added two further goals to their score. The first goal was the result of a splendid centre from a corner. The leather landed across the goal mouth amongst half a dozen players and was bustled through. 3—l. The ball was kept in Thistle’s territory and Campbell got his chance and sent in a |prrifio shot along the ground which puzzled Duncan and made the totals 4—l. Mr. Goffin refereed.
SENIOR B DIVISION JOHNSONVILLE (4) V. PETONE (1). Johnsonville and Petone tried conclusions on Anderson Park. In the first spell Johnsonville ran all over Petone, kseping them penned in their own twen-ty-five most of the timm Matthews finding the net twice. After the chango-ovor Petone reversed the position, Johnsonville spending little time outside their own quarters, although they added two points to their score, against one for Peitone. The game ended 4—l in favour of Johnsonville. Mr. Watt's refereed. BROOKLYN (2) V. SEATOUN (2). The Brooklyn-Seatoun game was fairly even for the first quarter of an hour. One of the Seatoun backs kicked the ball into his own goal, but shortly afterwards Telford equalised. Pridmore followed this up with a successful shot for Brooklyn in the second half, and towards the end of the game Kinder equalised. Brooklyn had rather the better of the (inme in the. second half, their backs playing well, but the forwards were weak.. Browning, Bowyer, Haney.
and Brown played wc ll for Brooklyn. Both goalies were good, and Iclloru, Wyett, Smith, and Grimstone were the pick of the Seatoun team. The wind changed at the end of the first s P e “’ and Seatoun played against it right through. Mr. B. Martin refereed. SECOND A DIVISION. Lyall Bay f>. Diamonds 0. Alarist 4. Hutt» 1. Institute met Watersiders on a. greasy ground at Kelburn Park. Institute set the pace and quickly had the Watersiders hard pressed. Smith, at outside right, nicely fc;l bv Rusterholz. sent across a good centre and Gill scored a doubtful goal, as he appeared well offside. I—o. From a gold kick Dwyer got possession and sent I aylor through, but Bell held him up and sent Institute on a mission, and Gill had an easv job to score. 2—o. Institute quicklv got down again, but Hamilton drove them back, and nice work bv Mclvav gave Jenkins a chance, which ho took., scoring, nicely. 2—l. Institute came, away, swinging the ball ahoutz- and Manley shot. Cox saved and slipped with the ball under him, the Institute players around him trying to kick the hall out of his hands. The referee, instead of awarding a goal, ordered a throw down, and Tn. stitute had no trouble in scoring, Kelleher doing the trick, .3 —1. After the interval the ■’rain became worse and miskicking was the order of the day. Gill was responsible for the fourth goal and Manley for the fifth. The players seemed unwilling ti go on and the two captains decided to abandon the game. The referee (My. C. F Ward) upheld the request. MARIST BEAT SCOTTISH WANDERERS. Scottish Wanderers failed to disiose of Marist at Association p aik. end t.ie score of ,4 goals to 2 does not indicate the superiority of the Marist team. Wanderers were without the services of Murray, their goalkeeper, owing to an injury he received to his hand, and Thompson played in his stand. Four minutes after the kick-off Barton scored an easy goal for Marist, and not long afterwards a second score was hoisted. Barton picked up. a punt from Fitzgerald, easily outwitted Arbuthnot, and a beautiful centre right to the goalmouth was bended in by Costello, 2—o. The Wanderers attacked in deadly earnest, and when in a good position were awarded a penalty, from which Lothian scored, 2 —l. There was no interval, and the teams changed ends and continued play. Johns mndo amends for many mistakes bv scoring Marist’s third goal, 3—l. Wanderers began to tire, and but for the excellent defence of Main, their left-hack, would have had difficulty in keeping the score .below the half-dozen. A shot from Costello was well saved by Thompson, but Cmlby promptly scut the hall into the net. 4 —l. Just on time Wanderers scored, (ho game ending, Marist 4, Scottish Wanderers 2. Mr. L. YALCA. C (2) V. HALS. DUNEDIN (0) At Lyall Bay a team from H.M.S. Dunedin were defeated by Y.M.C.A. C, the score at end of an interesting ganic, being 2 goals to nil in the local team’s favour. With flic advantage of a good breeze in (be first half. Y’.ALC.A. did most of the attacking. The naval men put. up a stout defence. So tenacious was their tackling that the local eleven, despite superior tactics, were unable to get the ball past Snelling, the “Dunedin’s” goalie, until close to half-time, when Stark scored. On changing over the navy set a stiff pace. They broke through their opponents’ defence with only Ewing to beat, but he proved too hard a proposition for the navy forwards. Orr scored the winner’s second goal. Kerrick, Bird, and Snelling were the pick of the visitors, with Ogilvie, Orr, Stark, and Ewing most outstanding for Y.M.C.A. < GAMES ELSEWHERE AUCKLAND.
