AFFORESTATION
VISVL' TO RANGITIKEI HEADS. A few davs ago the Hon. E. Newman, M.L.C., and Mr. T, R. Lees, managing trustee of Flock House, togeWr-r with their farm managers, accompanied Mr. L. 11. Bailey, of the State lorest Service on a visit <f inspection to the nursery and planted ar?il at Rangatiivei Hea ls. Both gentlemen are interesting themselves in afforestation and. with a view to furthering work of similar nature' on their own properties, undertook the journey to enable them to witness the outcome of recent activities on the part of the Forestry Service. The work of planting the sand dunes in that neighbourhood has been in progress for some time past and the visitors were impressed with the evident success which had attended the scheme Some 60.000 trees were planted out by the Department last year, while it is expected that the number will be increased to 100.000 this year Those which have been planted out along the sea front were found to be making good process and it is confidently expected that in a few years hence tho whole area will have become a large plnntalion. Mr. Newman is. interested in a on the sea coast near Levin, while tho boundary of Flock House on tho western side is on the sea front. It is the intention of Mr. Newman and Mr. L-es to nursue activities similar to those of the Forestry Service. The work has already been entered upon at Flock UoiKe. some 70,000 trees having been planted out, it beincr the intention of the trustees fo plant an area of JOO acres every year.
