EXTRA RATES DEMANDED PORT AUGUSTA HELD UP By Telegraph.—Pbess Association Dunedin, May 1. A disputs in connection with the loading of sand ballast on the, Commonwealth and Dominion line steamer Port Augusta arose this afternoon between the men engaged tn the operations and the local’agents. The Port Augusta arrived on Thursday morning from New York, via northern ports,, to discharge 460 tons of general freight and take in about 600 tons of sand ballast before proceeding to Port Kembla. The inward cargo was uhloaded on Thursday afternoon, and a gang of waterside workers commenced to load the ballast last night; the other three gangs commenced to-day, and work proceeded without hitch until 3.30 p.m., when the men then intimated that they wanted an extra ra.te ’ for such work As no agreement was come to between them and the agents, operations ceased.’ The matter has been referred to the Local Disputes Committee. In the meantime the Port Augusta is lying idle, and unless am agreement be reached in the morning, the vessel will probably be detained in port over the weekend.
