9 RECORD GATHERING AT BASIN RESERVE DANCING, PIPING AND RACING The Wellington Caledonian Society had fine weather for its third annual gathering at the Basin Reserve yesterday. after the postponement on account of the rain and wind on. Monday. A great revival in Scottish gatherings has been noticeable during recent years, and yesterday’s meeting reflected' this access of zeal. The entries in the piping, dancing, and athletic events were large, and included many of tho Dominion’s bestknown performers. In the men’s dancing events there was a very close contest between Duncan Mackenzie, of Dannevirke, and R. W. Haddow, of Wellington, for the McGregor Challenge Cup, which is open to the lady or gentleman gaining the highest number of points in Highland dancing. In the men’s section, Duncan Mackenzie just beat Haddow by one point, the scores being 16 to 15, but in the dance off with the ladies, Alisa Je,an~ McKenzie, for the second time in succession, took the challenge cup and gold medal. There arc many who consider that it. is unfair to ask men to compete with ladies in Highland , dancing, as the latter are so light bn their feet that the result is a foregone conclusion. Be that as it may, Alias Jean McKenzie ran away with the cup yesterday by a good margin, notwithstanding the fact that she had to compete against one of the foremost Highland adult male dancers in the Dominion. One or two New Zealand championship events were allotted to the gathering. These included the seauntriubhas for men, which was carried off by R. W. Haddow, of 'Wellington, and the sword dance, for boys under 14 years, which was annexed by G. McCombie. Another New Zealand championship event decided yesterday was the sword dance for boys between the ages of 14 and 18, which was won by Dave Thomas. In piping, the pibrochs were won by R. Thompson, of Wanganui; the marches by C. C. Macdonald, of Wanganui; and the strathspeys and reels by R. W. Haddow, of Wellington In the junior events the honours were easily carried off by T. Munro, of Dunedin, a youth who bids fair to develop into a New Zealand champion. This lad won tho Police Cup for junior piping. The New Zealand open championship for laments was won by C. C. Macdonald, of Wanganui, R. W. Haddow gaining second award. Jean McKenzie secured the cup for aggregate points in Highland dancing, her wins including the New Zealand championship for Highland fling.
The athletic events were interesting throughout, and formed a special feature of the gathering. The challenge cup, presented by Mr. Donald Gillies, for the winner of most points in the 100yds., 220yds;, 440yds., and 880yds. races, was won by D. Paris, who scored six points, E. E. Finch coming second with 5 points. Tho sports were -well controlled by an army of experienced officials, amongst whom Air. T. IV. Leslie stood out prominently as sports convener and starter. Mr. lan Mackay proved a capable secretary, wliile other officials worthy of mention were: Mr. J. C. Cusack (treasurer), Mr. A. C. Kitto, handicapper of athletic events; Air. AV. A. O’Donnell, handicapper of bicycle events; and Afessrs. W. H. Kilgour (Timaru), Adam J. Afunro (Wellington>, and N. McKenzie Forbes (IVanganui), judges of piping and dancing. Amongst the 5600 people pr,esent on the ground none look a more active part in the proceedings than the chief of the Caledonian Society (Air. David Clark). Air. R. W. AlcVilly acted as referee, and Mr. A. C. Kitto as marshal. Tho society’s Pipe Band enlivened the proceedings with a programme of spirited selections, their grand marches round the grounds arousing much enthusiasm.
