MANAWATU MEETING SYCORAX WINS PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP TAMATETE SCORES IN THE STAKES The Manawatu Pacing Club’s summer meeting was continued at Awapuni yesterday, in beautiful weather, Tho track was in excellent order, and the racing was most interesting throughout. There was a good attendance of the public. .Tflfr totalisator staff handled the sum of ’£52,228 during the day, compared with £54,874 last year, a decrease of <£2616. There were only five starters in the - Kelvin Handicap, Equitable being made a slightly better favourite than Royal Gift, -Sweet Song and All Cerise being . next in demand. From the start Equitable went to the front, but was soon joined by Royal Gift and March On. These three kept close together till the straight, where Sweet Song came fast on the outside. Equitable, however, only needed to be shaken up, and going on beat Sweet Song by half a length, ■ with Royal Gift a length away, just in front of Marell On. All the acceptors went to the post in the Te Matai Hurdles Handicap, Kyoto being a slightly better favourite than Ore Ore, with Zola third selection. Khartoum was first away, and led! along :.the back from Opiate, Kyoto, and Ore Ore. Kyoto was in front entering the . straight, just clear of Khartoum and Opiate. Kyoto drew away as they raced . along the back, but six furlongs from homo Ore Ore began to improve his -position, and was in front at the last hurdle. Kyoto, who jumped faultily, was tiring, and this left Ore Ore to go on and win bv three lengths froni Opiate, who beat Zola by z six lengths. Khar’toum was fourth. Opiate has run a couple of good races at the meeting, and should soon collect a stake. Kilreid was a slight!v better favourite than Celmisia andl Triboutet. with Santiago next in demand. Kilreid gave a i lot’of trouble at the post, and was left, when the barrier was released. \Kikmi got "a fly,” and led from Password and Triboulet along the back. Kikini was 1 still in front when heads were turned for home, and eventually won by a length from Triboulet, with In the Pink n similar distance away. Correspondent was fourth. .Admiral Codrington was installed favourite for the President’s Handicap, and was over <£soo better supported than Festivity. Printemps was third fancy, and then came Marqueteur. Owing to the barrier going out of order a “flag start” had to be effected. Marqueteur was the first out, followed by Admiral Codrington, ' Sycorax, and Esperance. Turning out of ’the straight Sycorax drew to the front, and put a break of four lengths on the field, her closest attendants being Admiral Codrington and Printempts with Snub last. When heads were turned for home Sycorax " was still in the van, and Admiral Codrington endeavoured to get on terms' with her. He,however, failed to make any impression, and then Martial Dawn came along with/a late run. The filly bended Admiral Codrington', hut failed . to reach Sycorax, the latter winning by ; a neck. Admiral Codrington was half a length away. Then came Festivity. Tainatete was looked on as the best of good things for the Palmerston North Stakes, for he carried more than half •the amount invested on the machine. Bonny'Briar, Pillage, and Little River were fancied in that order. Tamatete and Bonnie Briar led the field to the straight, iwh’erq Tamatete commenced to draw away, arffd Pirouette appeared on the scene. At the distance Little River got up on the rails, and headed Pirouette, but could not reach Tamatete, who won by a length. Pirouette, who showed a lot of pace, was half a length further back. Bonnie Briar was fourth. Kuia and Ania were the only scratchings in the Terrace Welter Handicap, for which Whiritas was made a good favourite. Lord Desmond - was next in request, and then came Sir Roseberry. After a false elart Chaplin showed out from the rise of the barrier, followed by Whiritas and Rugby. The two latter passed Chaplin along the -,back, and then. Rugby drew clear of Whiritas, Makere, and Chant Royal. At the entrance to the straight Whiritas had headed Rugby, but was immediately challenged by Makers and Chant Royal, Makere eventually winning by a head from Whiritas, who beat Chant Royal by a neck. Jonquil was next. The Speaker carried most money in the Himatangi Welter Handicap, for which the eleven carded started 1 . Rose Wreath was second fancy, and Callaghan third. Nursing Sister was first away, and was followed by Jovial and War Baby, with Callaghan, Moutoa. Ivanova, and Hyttus last. The positions were unaltered till the straight was reached, where The Speaker and Callaghan came, through. The Speaker headed Nursing Sister and won by half a length’'with Callaghan, who did not get the beet of the early , running, a length' further back. Rose ‘Wreath was fourth. j The day's racing was brought to a i close with the Awapuni Handicap, for - I which all the acceptors went to the I post. This was the best betting race of ‘the day, and Gazique was made over twice as good a. favourite as Birki-e. The next in demand were Barleycorn, Hepta, and Martian. Miss. When the tapes werq released Tommy Rot, Astinome, and Automoana were the first away, Birkio being left. Tommy Rot was in front along the back, but rounding the bend into lhe straight Astinome and Barleycorn camo through, the former being a good neefe in front at the distance. Astinome then drew away, and won by a length, with Automoana half ■ a-length further back. Gazique put in a great run during the concluding stages, and got fourth. Astinome returned the best'dividend so far at the meeting. ■ DETAILS OF THE RACING. Details of the racing are:— KELVIN HANDICAP, of 250 sovs. One mile and 55 yards. Mr. S. J. Gibbons’s b. g.
