STRIKES DURING A THICK FOG LITTLE PROSPECT OF SALVAGE By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright Melbourne, December 27. The Union Company’s steamer Karitane, en route from Devonport to Port Kembla with a full cargo of copper ore and produce, went ashore on Dean Island, in Bass Strait, on Saturday night. The Karitane has no wireless and the news reached Melbourne only last night by wireless from the steamer Ceduna, which is standing by till a tug, which (has been dispatched to the scene, arrives. The Karitane’s crew of about thirty was landed safely on -the island. The steamer's holds are reported to be full of water, and' she is practically sunk. There is little prospect of either the vessel or her cargo being saved. Press Assn. (Rec. December 27, 11 p.m.) Melbourne, December 27. Tho chief engineer of the Karitaro states that the steamer encountered a thick fog on Saturday morning and speed was reduced. He suddenly received the command: “Full speed astern! Some time later the Karitane struck heavily and water poured in everywhere. After two hours’ searching for a suitable landing the vessel was beached in a sinking condition. —Press Assn.
