IMMIGRANTS TO AMERICA
CHARGES AGAINST STEAMSHIP COMPANIES. Washington, December 19. The Secretary of Labour, Mr. J. J. Davis, has asked the State Department to make representations to Britain against the Canard Steamship Company, for what he terms "a bold and, I believe, knowing attempt on the part of the company to violate the immigration laws, either because paltry profits may be gained thereby, or to discredit our immigration policv.” Mr. Davis has also ordered the infliction of fines on the company to the limit of the law. The circumstances arise from the arrival ot the liner Aquitania. with 390 Hungarian, immigrants, notwithstanding! ‘that all the steamship lines have been informed that the Hungarian quota is already exhausted up to July, 1922. Mr. Davis has also asked Mr. 11, Daugherty, the Attorney-General, .for a lenal opinion as to what action can be taken in regard to the apanlling situation which has arisen through the reckless disregard of the law on the part of the steamshin companies. The immigration authorities have been in constant controversy with the companies pract'enllv ever since the inauguration of the immigration law. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
