EDUCATION IN THE COUNTRY

WITHDRAWAL OF CONVEYANCE

ALLOWANCE.

A protest was voiced at the meeting of tho Wellington Education Board yesterday against the recent decision of the Education Department to withdraw conveyance and lodging allowances to pupils attending tho secondary departments of 'district high schools. Mr. Harkness considered that this decision would reflect harshly upon country children, and moved that further representations should be made to the Education Department on tho matter. Mr. Ixmdon said that such a proposal would force many people in tho country io desert their homos. Mr. Moss hoped they would make a strong protest on behalf of the country districts. Children attending primary schools in the country did not have teachers of the best, and it would l l>o verv unfair to remove the present conveyance and lodging allowance which assisted ihem to attend secondary schools. Many people were forced to leave the country simply that they might bo able to educate their children. It. was unanimously agreed to refer the matter back to tho Department.
