PURE SPORT

PUBLIC SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION GREAT GATHERING AT BASIN RESERVE The Basin Reserve was alive with juveniles yesterday. From an early hour in the morning, there was scarcely a yard of space Which was not occupied by a keen, eager-eyed youngster, who was just bursting to prove what he or she could do in the way of athletic prowess. The occasion was the annual sports meeting of the Wellington Public Schools Amateur Athletic Association, when the representatives of from thirty public schools in Wellington city and suburbs engaged in friendly athletic rivalry. This was the second championship meeting held by the association, and it far eclipsed the inaugural gathering held last year. Some idea of the size of tho juvenile athletic meeting may be gauged when it is stated that the entries totalled about ,1700. When added to this there were some thousands of spectators, the scene at the Basin Reserve was a most animated one. The organisation was carried out in that thorough manner which marks everything undertaken by public school teachers, who are skilled in the management of big numbers of children. Though dozens of competitions were in progress throughout the day, there was no confusion. Everything was run to time-table, and every competitor was on the allotted mark at the appointed moment. The creditable performances put up show' that Wellington has an army of young amateurs coming along, Who will run, hop, skip, and jump for pure love of the sport. There were no inquiries into inconsistent running yesterday. Every boy and girl was out to do his or her very best for the honour of the school. Among the army of officials, all of whom worked hard and successfully, may be mentioned: Mr. Balfour Kean (Hataitai), president; Messrs. W. H. Stainton (Karori) and A. E. East (Brooklyn); Mr. C.
