PUKEORA SANATORIUM BOWLING GREEN
Sir,—Three years or more ago, it being represented that a bowling green would be of great benefit to the patients, several Hawke’s Bay gentlemen contributed £2OO or more with which to provide it. The ground was duly levelled and the green formed. Moro than a year ago, being told that the green would be ready for play shortly, the Waipukurau Bowling Club appealed to the other clubs in the North Island lor bowls, etc., to equip it. and met with a generous response, ami so far as that part is concerned the patients could start playing to-day. But what of the green? One-third of it has grass, thistles, etc., on it a foot long, whilst the remainder, which has been cut, has countless bare patches, some grass, and a quantity of weeds and thistles. Now, there may have -been some excuse last year owing to the dry season. This year, however, the weather conditions have been perfect. 'The soil is of tho best, which is shown by the fact, that the topdressing for the Waipukurau Bowling and Tennis Clubs is obtained from close to the entrance to the Sanatorium, it is a case of sheer neglect,' and, to my mind, is a disgrace to all concerned. The Government must have some who are experts at this kind of work who could be spared for a short time. If the Department was not prepared io make good use of the money they should not have accepted it. If the amount subscribed is exhausted and they are not prepared to provide the small amount required, why not say so, then some steps could be taken so that these poorfellows may not be deprived of the benefit and enjoyment of the game—l am, etc., C. SAUNDERS, . Hon. Secretary, Waipukurau Bowling Club.
