MAGISTRATE’S COURT
THEFT FROM AN EMPLOYER. Police and summons cases were dealt with by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday. A young fellow named Robert Allan was found yesterday morning sleeping in an outhouse in Hobson Street. When arrested the young fellow was found to have Bs. 9d. in his possession. He was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Alfred Henry Bowers pleaded guilty to the theft of two commentators and three commentator rods, value 195., the property of Ihe Colonial Motor Co.; also with the theft of five dozen screws, value 235. 9d., and one carburettor top. value 405., the property of the same company. The accused was employed by the company and stole the goods. His employers gave him a good character. He had never previously been before the Court. Bowers was placed on probation for 12 months on the first charge, on the second ho was convicted and discharged, and on the third charge he was fined £5, in default 14 days imprisonment. Alfred J. Smith, charged with stealing one case cutlerv, value £250, the property of the New Zealand and African Steam Ship Company, was remanded to Wednesday. Bail was allowed in one surety of £2OO. or two of £lOO each. Augusta Mona Reiche, who was convicted of stealing two georgette blouses, value 635., tho. property of Elizabeth McKee, was ordered to be placed in the Salvation Army Home for a period ot twelve mopths. . Rhoda Gini pleaded guilty to being the owner of a dangerous dog. The animal was a Pomeranian poodle, and was alleged to have attacked a. woman. However the dog had been sent away, and in tlie circumstances she was ordered io pay 7s. costs. J. Julius was convicted and ordered Io pay 41s. costs' for boarding a tram while in motion. J. J. Firth, licensee of the Western Park Hotel, was convicted of keeping Ins premises open for the sale of liquor alter C p.m. It appeared that some cricketers from Andersn Park came into the hotel iust before 6 p.m., and betore. they had finished their drinks the closing hour had passed. In the circumstances Firth, was ordered to pay the costs, 415.. T. Davidson, John de. Blois, J. S. Guilford, D. Kinnear, P. Lavery, J. McGonagle, W. O’Leary, C. Styles C. s y tto ”> and R. Taylor, who pleaded guilty to being in the Western Park Hotel soon after 6 p.m., were convicted jUnd ordered to pay 7s. costs each. Florence A. Wilkinson, for whom Mi. J W. Jackson appeared, was charged with assaulting her daughter; also with ill-treating the girl. The evidence showed that the girl, who is 14 years of age, was well-nourished, and when examined bv the doctor showed several bruises. After hearing the evidence the_.:tgistrate said that he thought that the girl was perhaps rather more harshly handled than was necessary, but on the doctor s evidence he could not see Ins way to convict. Both informations were dismissed. but the girl at her own request and with the consent of the parents was committed to a receiving home.
