THE DRAPERY TRADE
DOMINION COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION POINTS IN THE TARIFF At the six-monthly meeting of the Dominion Council of tlie Now Zealand Federation of Drapers and Clothiers, just concluded in Wellington after a two days’ sitting, the following resolutions wore passed:— The New Tariff. In reference to the tariff proposals! *l. This federation compliments the Government upon its revision of the Customs tariff in respect to soft goods, in that many anomalies have been removed, and in its being generally framed upon more logical lines, and respectfully n further necessary improvement by: (a) Removing the distinction made between the duty charge upon union textile made up in the homes of the workers ns against that made up in a factory such discrimination being al ?" n direct challenge to home/ thrift. (W That such items of prime necessity as towels, towelling, terry squares, and quilts (made of cotton) bo placed on the free list, and that all silk goods be levied in duty as 20 per cent., with 30 per cent foreign, ns previously. We consider that the Government will be the earner® in revenue by this method. ' (c) That the Government be requested to use the intermediate rate for purposes of reciprocity at the earliest opportunity; but this federation considers any suggestion to put the Dominions into the third schedule forthwith is most ill-advised.
Conference on Wages and Prices. "That this council approves of the suggested conference of commercial, financial, and other interests, with a view to reducing unemployment, ana assisting trade conditions to get back to normal as soon as possible. “That as at any such conference the retailers’ profits (set manufacturers statement at Auckland Conference) will be criticised., adequate representation of our federation is necessary. “That in tiny reduction of wages, prewar standards should not bo tho goal: the aim should be rather a permanent Improvement of tho workers position through a more intelligent and increased output. Reduction of Cable Rates. "This council is of opinion that the time has arrived for a reduction tn the Pacific cable rates. Such a reduction would bo of benefit to the business of tho country as a whole, and would entail little, ‘if any, corresponding risk to tho successful financing of an enterprise which has, and should continue to receive, the loyal support of commercial men generally.” Christmas Holidays. The Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin delegates announced that in each of those cities it had boon decided to observe the usual Saturday half-holiday on Christmas Eve and on New Yearts Eve and the usual lain shopping night, on tho Friday, thereby making no change in tho ordinary weekly arrangement observed throughout the. year, and permitting all employees to gain the full benefit of the holiday, extending from 1 p.m. on Saturday until the following Wednesday morning in each case. State Departmental Balance-sheets. The federation complimented the Government upon its decision to have an annual balance-sheet prepared by every Department of State: a reform which must meet with the approval also of all other commercial bodies. Electoral Act. "That the Act be amended so as to read: ‘To give employees reasonable tune to record their votes,’ that being the clause in the Factories Act. At the present time, during by-elections, shops in tho district must close, so that the phenomenon of one side of a street closed and! the other side open is presented, as recently occurred in Queen Street, Auckland.”
