THE CIVIL SERVICE SALARIES CUT
Sir, —It seems that the long-expected cut in tho Public Service salaries is about to eventuate at last. Mr. Massey has stated that it will bo in the vicinity of 10 per cent., and I think we can take it for granted that it will be no less. Now, Sir, is there any proof that the cost of living has gone down to that extent? On the contrary, with a few trifling reductions, the cost of living is practically as high ns ever. Nevertheless, to ease the burdens borne by the unfortunate farmers, manj- of whom, owing to their greed when times were good, largely increased their holdings, and now find it somewhat difficult to pay their interest, rates and taxes (and incidentally to maintain a motor-car or two), the Public servant must be reduced in salary. The State wants an efficient Public Service, but what dissatisfied servant, private or public, is efficient?—l am, etc., PUBLIUS. Martinborough, November 21, 1921.
