EQUALITY OF SACRIFICE
POSITION OF FARMERS’ UNION VIEWS OF THE PRESIDENT By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. Palmerston North, November 25. At a meeting of the Provincial Executive of the Fanners’ Union at Marton to-day a letter was read from tho Dominion Secretary stating he was directed by the Dominion President, Mr. IV. J. Polson, to write to the executive expressing the opinion that the various branches should use their discretion regarding matters relating to taxation, retrenchment, and preference to unionists. Mr. Polson was extremely desirous that nothing in the nature of political action should be allowed to occur, and that nothing was done to create the impression that the Farmers' Union was seeking to either embarrass the Government or"threaten political reprisals. He found that already an attempt was being made to turn the action of the joint deputation of producers to political account, end ho wished to prevent the union being made use of for any such purpose. Ho suggested further that it should be made clear in any public discussions that all the union was asking for was equality of sacrifice, rigid economy, and better labour conditions. It would, bo inadvisable to stir up public sentiment against tho producers any more than was advisable just now. The chairman and members expressed themselves in hearty accord with tho president’s viewpoint.
