SCULLING CONTEST
WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP. The weather has not been very kind of late to the two competitors for the world’s sculling- championship, though both Arnst and Hadfield are settling down to steady work, writes the Wanganui correspondent of an exchange. Hadfield, being lighter and in good trim, is undertaking less arduous work than the present holder of the title, who is gradually bringing his weight down without injury to himself. Arnst promises to be a very fit man when the race eventuates, and, with a view to operating over the championship course and lo get thoroughly acquainted with the river, he has now taken up his camp about three-que.rters 01 a mile above the course. The challenger is being worked very carefully, and he shows improvement and better finish in his fibwing. Certain alterations, to his that have been 'for greater freedom in sculling, ‘and Hadfield shoots his boat along with greater ease. It is expected that his new boat will be shipped by Towns at Hie end of this month. Hadfield has certainly shown greater technique in his work, and his prowess in the boat entitles him to serious consideration. His Bupporlers have the greatest confidence that youtfi will prevail, while on the other hand Arnst’s great staying power and forceful strokes lead many to assume that the veteran oarsman, with his experience, will not be found wanting on the eventful day.
