N.Z. AUTOMOBILE UNION

MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive committee of the New Zealand Automobile Union was held on Monday. There were present: Dr. C. ,P. Knight (chairman), Messrs. I. V. Wilson. Stott, Donne, Banks, White, and L. A. Edwards. A letter was received from tho Minister of Internal Affairs in reply to a suggestion from the union that the Lights on Vehicles Act be amended making it compulsory for every vehicle whether horse driven or mechanically propelled to carry a rear light at night. The letter stated that this question had be'en dealt with as far as motorists were concerned in the Motor Vehicles Bill.

The Wairarapa Automobile Association wrote strongly objecting to clause E of the union’s suggested amendments of the Motor Vehicles Bill, and also suggesting the following alteration to the Lights on Vehicles Act: —"That it should be compulsory for every vehicle other than horse-drawn, motor-cycle or cycle to carry at night a rear red light of not less than 2in. in diameter. In the case of horse-drawn vehicles, motorcycles. or cycles a red reflector of not less than l(in. in diameter to be used." It was resolved that the Wfiirarapa Association’s suggestion be embodied in a letter to the Minister of Internal Affairs, and when writing the Minister tho secretary was instructed to point out that in the case of all vehicles loaded with goods or materials such as timber projecting from the Tear of the vehicle a projecting light in addition to the rear light on t'he vehicle should be carried. A further letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs, in reply to a remit r/issed at the annual meeting re loading of vehicles with goods or materials projecting on either side more than six inches beyond the extreme width of the vehicle, and suggesting that it was thoug'ht that this matter should be dealt with by local bodies arranging for by-laws, was received. The secretary was instructed to reply giving the various reasons why such a by-law should be uniform throughout the country. A letter was received from Mr. J. A. King, Feilding, advising that steps are being taken to form a motor club in Feilding and asking for any information re rules and regulations, etc. A counter-part of the agreement of affiliation between tho Royal Automobile Association and the New Zealand Union was received.

The question of forming new associations was debated, and it was decided to leave this matter in the hands of Mr. L A. Edwards and Mr. H. J. Stott to take such steps and report accordingly as deemed necessary. Tho question of filling the vacancy occasioned by tho death of Mr W. Beau-champ-Platts was considered. According to tho rules the executive haa not the right to appoint a secretary, and it was therefore decided to write the various affiliated associations advising that the office of secretary had become vacant and asking for suggestions; also pointing out that if the right to make an appointment is not delegated to the executive committee it will have to be done by calling the General Committee together. It was decided to appoint Mr. J. C. Bradley as acting-secretary os from November 1. at the same remuneration as the late secretary until such time as a permanent officer is appointed. It was decided to write to the various affiliated associations pointing out that a minimum income of .£2OO will bo required to keep the union in existence and suggesting that tho subscriptions be revised as under: Auckland, .£5O per annum;'"Wellington, .£5O per annum; Wainarapa, -CIO per annum; Hawke’s Bay, .£2O per annum; Poverty Bay, .£l5 per annum; Marlborough, ~CIS per annum; Nelson. .£lO per annum. For the future guidance of the Executive Committee the secretary was instructed to ask the associations to notify him of their present membership. It was decided to pay into the estate of the late secretary LIO 13s. 4d.. being tho amount of salary due for October and payment for the month of November in full.
