GAMBLING ON TUG WHARF
EIGHT PLAYERS CAUGHT AND FINED. The police raid on the tug wharf on Friday afternoon resulted in the following men appearing before Mr. W. H. Bundle. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday— Sydney Leckie, John Moyes, John Kyle, John Ani. Alfred Ricketts. James Blair, Walter Corbett, and Vere Welch. These men, who were represented by Mr. C. A. L Treadwell, were charged with playing by way of wagering with dice, at a game of chance known as sing-ti-lu.” All pleaded guilty. . , „ , Chief-Dolect.ive Kemp said that as a result of complaints received from the wives of wharf workers, who had failed to take their wages borne. Detective Tricklebank and three constables kept watch, raided a hazard school Hie previous afternoon, and arrested tho accused men. Mr. Treadwell eaid that at sing-ti-lu it was not possible to lose ns much money as at “two -up” or “crown and anchor,” ami when the game was for pennies a man could play for a considerable time without winning or losing more than a few ponce. These men were waiting for the bell to ring for work, and were filling in the time playing the game. Ho suggested that tho fines should be light, for all but three of the accused were married men. The Magistrate fined Kyle, Ani, and Blair, the three single men, each .£4, and the others were fined .£2 each.
