C.J.C. MEETING

CANTERBURY CUP, WON BY AMYTHAS' ’ PLUTO’S JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP OAKS WOxN BY PALESTRINA . .1 ’ , : : ' By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. ' Christchurch, November 9. The Canterbury Jockey Club's metropolitan meeting was continued to-day. The weather for the most part was cold and showery, but the attendance was fair. The totalisator returns were .963,669, against .£66.803 on the third day last year. Ore Ore, who had A. McDonald in the caddie, was-a good favourite in the Port Cooper Hurdles, and he won after a Rood finish with Maniahera, who to-day was ridden by J. It. Kaan. General Petain led the other pair, into the straight, hut they came away then, and the favourite won by a neck. Good Start was going strongly in behind the leaders when ho fell two fences from 'home. The bracket. Farceur and Veil, was • t a very short price in the Spring Nureery Handicap, but the odds were never in doubt);as the top-weight jumped out smartly and led the whole way. Prosperity was always handy, but had no chance with the winner. Herl Kris was u poor third, and then came Veil and Cypher. There were no scratchings in the Otaio Plate, and Esperance, who saddled up very well, was made a good favourite. She had every chance, but failed in a fast-run race after being in behind the leaders, into the, straight. At the start. Rebuff led, but at Cntts’s he was joined T>y Mazama and with five fwlongs to go the latter went out by himself. Enter-' ing the/ straight, the favourite and Warlove, were next, but in the run home Bonnie Maid shot out. She could not Teach Mazama, who won easily. Warlove wa>; third and then came Caverock and Hiero. The Hawk was the only scratching for the Canterbury Cup, Cupidon being a good favourite, with Amythas second choice. In the birdcage Cupidon, Royal Star, and Sasandf stripped very well. At t'he start the three-year-olds went to the front and led up the straight and past Cutis’s. At the mile, Amythas ran into second place and three furlongs further on Cupidon oommepeed to falter. Enter-' ing the straight Amythas wap clear, hut at the two furlongs Start/id challenged. Amythas had no difficulty in detaining his lead and he won by three lengths' from Royal Star. Starland six lengths away and then came Penitent. Vagabond was the last to finish. The thirteen acceptors all went to the / post for the Jockey Club Handicap, Tamatete being a good favourite with several of the others well backed.. At the start Royal Mac got squeezed back and Grotesque showed out first. Tamatete toon took charge and with Pit Prop led down the back from Affectation and Grotesque. Rounding the bend Grotesque fell back and Pluto moved up. In ’ the straight ho joined Tamatete, and Affectation also made a forward move. Halfway down the Tunning Tamatete compounded and Royal Mac appeared on the outside. In a very close finish Pluto won by af head from Affectation, with Royal Mac a head away. Tamatete was fourth, and then came Trespass and Purple Spur. The Oaks was generally regarded' as a duel between 'Palestrina and Cleasanta, and they finished in that order. The former was a good favourite, and taking charge in the straight she won easily from Cleasanta with Kilcullen a poor third. The last-named set a fast pace •and at, ono stage of the race had a big break,- but tho favourite had her at .the home turn. • • All started in the Ashley Handicap, Bonnie Winkle being a better favourite than Whipping Boy, with the others well b-u'/.’d. Kerb and Whipping Boy made the running from the favourite, and Silent King into the straight. The lastnamed then took charge and won by half a length from Whipping Boy. St. Easel was a length further Lack, and the favourite finished fourth. The concluding event went to Castellan after a good finish with ■ Humboldt . and' Songbird. Rose Wreath was fourth and Miss- Gold next. Tho early running was made! by Tatdu Tatau, who led into tho straight, where 'the placed horses took charge. Danger Zone.was out well, but ho got a bad bump and was eent back to last. DETAILS OF THE RACING. By Teldrranh—Press Association. PORT COOPER HURDLES, of 500 so vs. One mile and three-quarters. .
