WELLINGTON COLLEGE

THE BOARD! OF GOVERNORS

A meeting of the Board of Governors of tlio Wellington College was held yesterday morning. There were present Air. IV F, Ward (chairman). Sir E. Osborne Giiibes, Messrs. W. H. P. Barber. R. A. Wright, ALP., T. Forsyth, W. Denton, R. Darrocli, and W. 11. Field, M.P. It was decided that a deputation should wait upon the Government at 10 o’clock this morning concerning the promise to erect a house for the telescope at the Wellington College Observatory. The headmaster (Mr. T. R. Crosswcll) reported that the number- on the roll was 730. and the average attendance 685, or 94 per cent. "There are signs,” proceeded the headmaster, ' that the attention of Parliament is to be directed io the state of our buildings. The Minister of Education is to pay a visit of inspection shortly, and several members have recently been shown over. These latter expressed themselves as surprised nt the conditions compared with those existing in other centres. Auckland, for instance, now has two boys’ schools, and two gi”-s schools, and not one of them is more than about ten years old.” The headmistress (Miss M'T.can) reported that a generous gift of AlO had been made bv Airs. W. Collins to the college hostel, and it was propos'd to spend the amount on games material for the boarders. An idea wns prevalent that onlv holders of proficiency certificates could attend the college, Tim far. that 122 wore paying pupils should correct this idea. The commercial classes had raised .£6O towards a better equipment in commercial material. The annual sports of the school were to be held at Kelburn Park on November IS. L had hoped.” concluded Miss AlcTean, to hear of at lepst two rooms for next vp-ar's accommodation. The proposal to exclude Hutt and Petone children was made before 1918. and when an outcry resulted they wore crowded in bv ns two or three weeks later. As. far as I can ascertain there is special provision being made io receive extra pupils at the Hutt, where one room would have to accommodate all qualified for secondary education. The Petone children are, I believe, lief ter provided for.”
