Mr. Nassey Thompson, manager in Motueka for Messrs. Thompson and Hills, is responsible for the statement “that there has, in recent years, been a steady decline in tho standard of raspberries. The average returns per year formerly were about three tons per acre. They have steadily declined, till now the average would not exceed ono nnd a half tons,” remarks nn exchange. This is a serious position, and demands tho closest attention and investigation, as it is already having a serious effect on the returns from the raspberry lands of this district. It is suggested that the. proper selection of canes and the growing of the best types under expert, management and proper nursery conditions would soon increase lhe average yield. There are a number of very fine varieties now in cultivation, and some of these may, with advantage, be introduced under proper Government plant quarantine, and tested out to see if they will succeed under our soil and climatic conditions better than types we have.. However, lhe selection of lhe varieties already here may be found to give the best 'results commercially, and it if} urged that immediate steps should be taken to improve the average quality and productivity of the Nelson raspberry beds. Eight crocodiles, which were left hv a kinerna company in a lake at Versailles, caused a panic among people who went there to bathe.
