SEAMEN ENTERTAINED

SAILORS’ FRIEND SOCIETY. The holiday season proved a busy time for the Sailors’ Friend Society. On Sunday Mr. S- Costell was the morning preacher. He spoke on "The Book and its Influence.” In th® afternoon Mr. R. M. Griffiths, assisted by Mrs. Weston and the Misses Lewis and Tucker, entertained the men to tea. Tn the evenin" Mr. J. Moore, missioner. preached o„° "Drunk jwith Success.” Mr H- 1 Johns took the lesions. Mrs. G. Good was at the organ. There was a very largo attendance at the song service which followed, when the soloists were the Misses M. H. Davies and Ashenden. Yesterday the men were debarred fro’ l } the. tusnal country trip fiv U IP '"’ l ‘ < ’ southerly, but in the spacious institute from 11 a.m. onward a time of rare enjoyment, under the guidance of the missioner, was passed. . Lunch, tea, and supper, provided by kindly donors, was prepared bv a big Ixind of willing helpers. Tn the tugs-of-war, the Indies beatthe men, and the single ladies beat the married ladies. The winners in the day’s sports were: —Misses V. Brown. Orange, Colons, J. Gray, and MessrsM'Kenzie, E. Turner. Lansdown, John Gray. Tn the evening a delightful concert was given by Mrs. E. J. Burt, who was ably assisted by her efficient orchestra and the Misses V. Mueller. Roberts, and May Ormond, and Messrs. Oswin’and Millier. Encores were demanded with much insistance. A vote Of thanks was moved by a sailor, who saiC how grateful he and his fellow-seamen were for tho bright The committee and the missioner thank all who did s.o much to make tho day bright for the men in port.
