SAFETY DEVICES FOR RAILWAYS

Two new devices for increasing the safety of railway travel have lately been introduced on British railways. One is for use in fogs on sections of line where automatic cab-signalling is not installed. It frequently happens that fogs descended so suddenly that the men who were detailed to put detonators on the lino could not arrive in time to avoid danger. To meet this situation repeater signals are now used. They are placed on short posts close to the line, and theTam\ps are switched on by tho signalmen in the cabins when the fog comes on. This device is adapted for electric railways. The second invention referred to is an anti-telescoping device for railway carriages. It is well known that the heaviest loss of life in railway collisions occurs through tho tendency of one carriage to mount and crash through the ligjat woodwork of another. . A British railway company has accordingly introduced special buffers and in addition shock-absorbing corrugated fenders Those fenders have projecting teeth which fit into each otlisr when the carriages arc forced together. In this way the'alignment of the carriages will be maintained when a collision occurs.
