TARANAKI STREET LAND VALUES
HIGH RENTALS OF DWELLINGS. ’ The Miller Hardware Co. applied to Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, to have the, rentals fixed for two dwelling houses in Taranaki Street. It was admitted on brt.alf of the company that they desired possession of the houses for the purpose of pulling thorn down. ’lhe old rentals were 30s.“and 25«. per week respectively, and several families .(.ere in occupation, of the premises, which stand on land of rather special value. The value of the first house iind land was assessed at> £2490. which worked out to a rental or £197 12s. 7d., -or approximately £4 -per' week; the second was valued at £2425. t and the yearly rental of this was fixed at £l9l 17s. Bd. The Magistrate observed that the oc- . cupants could not possibly pay these , rentals, and the result would be that the ( houses would bo pulled down and several ' families turned out of their homes. It was evident that the existing legislation did not, at present, provide for such cases as these.
