N.Z. COUNCIL’S REPORT WELLINGTON’S “PRIDE OF PLACE” The annual meeting of thq New Zealand Cricket Council is to bo held in Christchurch on October 28. Tho annual report reads as follows: —The bal-ance-sheet shows the finances of tho council to bo in a satisfactory condition, there being a cash balance at tho end of the year of £1174 12s. 6d., against which there are liabilities accrued to the extent of £ll Us. The Australian Team’s Tour. Tho Australian Board of Control accepted the invitation of the council to send an Australian team to New Zealand during last season, and the visitors asserted a superiority in every match of the tour, and proved themselves a thorough good slue. Mr. T. Howard, a member of tho Australian Board of Control, came as manager, whilst the team was fortunate m being capt.lined by that celebrated international, Mr. Vernon Hansford. , lhe tour was of great educative value to New Zealand cricketers, who had an opportunity of seeing the game played by men who are on the verge of test cricket. Tho members of tbn team were very ponulai, both on and off the field, and fully upheld' the traditions of Australian cricket. Considerable interest, in the tour was taken by players and public alike, and the finances of the council became materially strengthened as a result. Two teet matches wore played against Now Zealand, at Wellington and Auckland. The first was drawn, but. the match at Auckland resulted in a decisive victory for the Australian team by an innings and 227 runs. An innovation in connection with New Zealand cricket was the arranging of a match against the combined minor asoociations. which was played at Wellington, and resulted in an easy win l for the visitors bv an innings and six rung. Plunket Shield Matches. The result of the Plunket Shield matches gives pride of place for the season to Wellington. The Wellington Cricket Association is to be heartily congratulated on its representatives being the holders of the Plunket Shield. Its success is tin? reward of keenness and the determined pursuit of a definite object. The outstanding individual performances in these matches were:—J. S. Hiddleston, 144; H. E. Burton 68 for Wellington; A. Anthony, 55 and 113; N. C.Sneddon, 139, 91 and 60; C. A. Sneddon, 119; S. G. Smith. 91 and 62: and E. Horspool, 90. for Auckland. With tuo ball. S. G. Smith, 8 wickets for 131 and 6 for 70; N. C. Sneddon, 7 for 34, 5 for 23; and IV. S. -Brico, 6 for 64. and 7 fur 112 all deserve recognition. Three matches ,vere played, resulting as follow:—Auckland v. Hawkes Bay, won by Auckland by an innings and 354 runs. Auckland v. Canterbury, won by Auckland by 382 runs. Auckland v Wellington, won by Wellington by 105 runs. The long needed alterations m the Plunket Shield rules have now been passed, and will Be In force during the coming season. The Management Curts--mittee is confident that the alterations will be to the benefit of the game, and an increased in all representative matches is looked for. under ihe new condition*. Hawke Cup. This competition continues to be keenly competed for by Hie minor associations. The cup is now held by Wairarapa. who have wrested the trophy from Poverty Bay, the latter -having held it for two years. An interesting competition for this cup for the coming season seems to be assured. Heathcote Williams’ Shis’a. Only two matches were played for this trophy during the season, but the keenest interest was displayed. Results:— Palmerston North High bchool v. CITY RESERVES ALLOCATED COST TO THE ASSOCIATION. Various recommendations affecting cricket were before last night s meeting of the City Council. Some discussion took place when the committee, in referring to the Basin lieserve, recommended that the council enter into an agreement with the Cricket ( Association for a ’ period of two years, such agreement to provide for the payment by the association of ft rental of £2OO per annum, plus 15 P er cent, or the gross gate takings on occasions when a charge is authorised for admission to tho ground. Should such rental ot £-00 and the percentage of the gross gate takings not amount in any one year to £3OO, tho association is then to pay such amount of their excess of receipts over cxnonditure (if any) up to 50 per cent as’will make the annual payment to the C °Councillor Dale said, that the chwirman of the committee, Councillor Thomp son had unconditionally surrendered to the Cricket Association.
