NEW SCHOOL AT FEATHERSTON
OPENED ON SATURDAY. The new school at Featherston was opened on Saturday last in the presence of a large gathering of residents. Air. T. Forsyth represented the AVellington Education Board, of wh'ch he is chaiiman. The new’ school is constructed of wood, with a red asbestos tiled roof, and stands on a two-acre block, which lias frontages to Clifford Square, Lyon and Revans Streets. An acre of land adjoining has been secured to permit of an extension of the play area in the future, '■'he Ij-shapesi ono story building contains five large class rooms, four of which are 26ft. by 24ft., and the fifth 30ft. by 21ft. The lartcr room may be opened up into an adjoining class room by folding back the doors, thus providing a largo room 56ft. by 24ft.. The class rooms have a north-easterly and north-westerly aspect, nnd tho most is made of that by tho walls of the school being almost wholly glazed. Cross ventilation is provided by means of interior corridor windows. There Is a capacious chak room opposite (he central entrance, and rooms are provided for tho head teacher and staff. Tho outbuildings (two) consist of up-to-date latrines nnd shelter sheds of reinforced concrete, tho shed being quite a large roofed-in area, open on three sides.
Tho new reinforced concrete school nt Martinhorough twhioh replaces the one burnt down a. year ago) is within six weeks of completion. It would havo been ready now but for delays duo to the shortage of plasterers. Tho school has been designed on model lines, and will contain six largo class rooms, and all requisite offices.
