TECHNICAL EDUCATION

INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION MAKES A DONATION. There was a warm discussion at last night's meeting of the Industrial Association concerning a proposal that the association should give -£5OO to the funds of the Technical College. The proposal was made by Mr. L. R> Partridge. As a result of tho association’s industrial exhibition in 1911, he said, there was in hand the sum of 411100, which, with interest, amounted now to about .£l3OO. He contended that the association should give every support to technical education. The position of the Technical College was well known. Funds were urgently needed, as .£12,0(10 would be required to complete tho college. Tlie Master Plumbers’ Association had given X-100, and he thought it. was up to tho Industrial Association to giv/ .£-500. He moved that such a gift should bo forwarded from tho association. Mr. T. Ballinger, wno seconded the motion, said that the association should devote the whole of the principal to the fund. The president (Mr. C. J. Hard) considered that the association would arrive at a crisis in its own affairs sooner or later, when ft would have to find quarters’ "I am prepared to agree to a reasonable contribution," he said, “but I don’t think .£!tC9 fa one. I’m jealous nliout this money. My duty Is more to the association than to the Technical Education Board. I don’t think the city is doing all it should do.” The view was expressed hy Mr. H. Mainland that tho funds of the, association should be used to get it a hall. He moved ns an amendment that the association contribute 4150 to the funds of the Technical College. Mr. Partridge vehemently announced that he was prepared to guarantee the £5OO if the association contributed it and a hitch occurred- relative to legislation. "I. wouldn’t let th<> motion be nut, under (hose conditions,” said Mr. AVard. Mr. Ballinger referred to tho proposal to contribute .£5O as “the meanest thing I have ever hoard of.” Mr. Mainland's amendment was carried.
