CRICKET
SELECT ON OF SENIOR TEAMS &’ Y.M.C.A. AND INSTITUTE ADMITTED The Management Committee of tho Wellington Cricket Association met last evening, the chairman, Mr. C. G. Wilson, presiding. Captain Jennings, of tho Defenco Department, attended for the purpose of explaining the position with regard to military iiarades. He regretted the feeling that had been created regarding the matter. The Defenco Department wished to meet cricketers in every way possible, and with a view to overcoming the difficulty he suggested that when a player wanted to participate in a cricket match his application lor- leave from a paradci should be (iccompanied. |by an endorsement from his club secretary. This would ensure that it was not a “put-up job." The player would require to make up. his parade on another occasion. Only half a dozen or so afternoon parades had to be attended during tho year. It was realised that cricket and sport generally were of value in military training. Tho chairman said that while the association would not be a party to encouraging young pion to shirk their military duties, it considered it desirable to keep them engaged in active sport. He considered that Captain Jennings’s suggestion afforded a good way out of tho difficulty. The committee decided to notify club secretaries of tho new arrangement with tho Defence authorities, a copy of all endorsements of applications . for leave to be forwarded to the association socJ. L. Jameson wrote donating three gold medals for competition among juniors. . Tho secretary reported that entries totalling 88 teams had been received from 34 clubs.
