LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, over which tho Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworth) presided, was held last evening. \ Tn view of tho cases of bubonic plague that have broken out in Sydney, the Department of Public Health directed tho council to bo very strict in tho matter of seeing that rate are destroyed. —Tho Mayor stated that ths content's of the communication had been shown tho inspector, who had been instructed to report immediately any places harbouring rats. The Hutt District Cricket Club forwarded a fee of 4119 for the use of tho Recreation Ground for tho ensuing season, and made application for an additional wicket for tho use of junior members. —The matter of tho additional wickot was referred to tho chairman of No. 2 Committee, with powlr to act. A communication was received from tho town clerk, Petone, stating that the flooding of the low-lying northern portion of tho Potono Borough was caused to a considerable extent by the overflowing of the creek in Huggins’s Gully, and suggested that the engineer of tho two boroughs should inspect the spot, with a view to taking preventive measures.—The Mayor stated that when more than four inches of rain fell during 24 hours there was such a deluge of water that it was an extremely difficult matter to mako adequate provision for its being carried away. It was decided to accede to Petone’s request.
