PETONE ROWING CLUB

THE OFFICIAL OPENING. In spite of the unpropitious weather there was an exceptionally large attendance of the public at the official opening of tho twenty-first season of the Petone Bowing Club, which took place at the clubhouse on Saturday afternoon. In tho unavoidable absence of the patron (Mr. F. Mothes) the president of the <dub, Mr. H. C. Collett, presided over the gathering, included in which were visitors from the Wellington and < Star Clubs. The heavy seas Tunning rendered racing impossible, and it was decided to contest the various events oil Saturday next. Advantage was taken of the occasion to unveil the club's honours board, <on which is inscribed the names of 20 members who served during the war. Out of a membership of 40 at the time, the president stated that 50 per cent, had seen service, six members having made the supreme sacrifice. To the dependants of those men the club extended its deepest sympathy, and as a mark of respect to the dead the assemblage stood with bared heads for two minutes, after which the Municipal Band played the National Anthem. Afternoon tea was provided by a ladies’ committee, which comprised Mesdames Duncan, Love, and Hume,' Misses Clark, Parsons, Hume (3). Senior (2). and Duncan. CUTTER RACES. In conjunction with the opening of the Towing season two annual cutter races were rowed under the auspices of the Petone Navals’ Ex-Members’ Association. The White Horse Whisky Cup event provided one of the most interesting con. teets ever witnessed from the local foreshore, and after a hard pull Petone ExNavals secured tho verdict over Wellington by four lengths. The winning crew worn as follow:—F. Ryan (cox), Sharon, Johnson, Martin, Tetley, Fraser, Sellwood, Parrant, Gaylers. The race for tho Mothes Cup was also productive of an interesting finish, the event being won by 17th Battery, N.Z.A., by four lengths. The following comprised the crew':—ll. ITardham (cox), Shardlow, Hoppleston (s.). Johnson, , Bell, M’Laughlin, Christie, Gates, Conroy, Jervis.
