THE LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP

FINAL TO BE PLAYED TO-DAY

The semi-finals of the New Zealand ladies’ championship golf tournament were completed at Heretaunga yesterday. .Mrs. Guy AVilliams (Masterton) beat Miss N. AVriffht (Timaru), last year’s champion, after a hard struggle. Tho conditions were generally in favour of Mrs. AVilliams, whom the heavy course suited, but Miss AVright put up a good fight, and the full course was played out, Mrs. AA'illianis winning 2 up at tho 18th hole.

Mys. AVilliams started off well by winning the first two ’holes—4 and 5, 5 and 6—respectively. The third hole was halved in 4. Tho fourth went to Miss AA’right in 4 against 5. At tho fifth holo Mi's. .Williams got on the green in one with a fine drive. Miss AVright pulled her first shot, but recovered. Mrs. AVilliams holed out in 3, winning the hole. Miss Wright pulled uji, winning the next holo, Mrs. AVilliams being unfortunate with her fourth stroke. She took 6 to Miss AVright’s 5. Both players were on tho green in 4 in the next hole, where Miss AVright won 7 against 8, making the score all square. Miss AVright wae bunkered in 'her second shot at the eighth hole, which she gave, leaving Mrs. AVilliams again one up, a lead which she increased by winning tho next hole. The tenth hole was halved. In the eleventh hole Miss AA’right got. tho green in two. Mrs. Williams was slightly off tho fairway with her second, bat successfully recovered <the green. Miss AVright won. the holo in 4. Mrs. AVilliams one up. Tho twelfth holo was won by Mrs. AA’illianis, tho thirteenth halved, and the fourteenth won by Miss AVright, who had narrowly missed the hole with her second putt. At the fifteenth both players successfully negotiated tho green with their first ehots over the stream Both holed with splendid putts, Mrs. AVilliams from tho very edge of tho green. The hole was halved in 2. Mrs. Williams won the sixteenth, but lost tho seventeenth hole. Tho last holo was halved. leaving Mrs. Williams the winner, 1 up. In the other semi-final Miss M. Payton, of Auckland, won from Miss Bell (Wellington). At the fourth holo they were all square. Miss Bell laid a stymie at tho seventh hole. At tho tenth holo Miss Payton was 3 up. Tho thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth boles were halved. Miss Payton being then two up. The sixteenth hole she won in four, and the game, 3 up acd 2 Mrs. AVilliams and Miss Payton will to-day- play off the final—two rounds of the course, 36 holes Miss Payton, who tied with Mrs. Dodgshun on Saturday for the L.G.U. Challenge Bowl, 89 all, scratched yesterday, leaving Mrs. Dodgshun the winner. In the second round of the bogey handicap, tho best cards sent in were:— Miss Mantell. 1 down; Miss Beadel, 2 down; Miss Cotterill, 4 down.

NEW ZEALAND LADIES’ GOLF UNION BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING. Tho annual meeting' of delegates to the New Zealand Ladies' Golf Union was held ’at Heretaunga. Miss Bell (vicepresident for AViffilngton) presiding owing to the absence through illness of the president, Miss _Rattray.'’ There were present 50 delegates, representing in person or by proxy some 46 clubs. The election of Levin, Papakura, To Aroha, Queen’s Park, Wairarapa, AATiakatane, Rangiora, Ashburton, Titirangi Links, and Carterton as memhera of the union was notified by the secretary, the number of affiliated clubs now being 60. Remits from clubs were considered and adopted as follow:—That th» limit of handicaps for competitors in the New Zealand championship be 12 instead of 15; thfit the revision of pars bo deferred, pending further information from England; that a sub-committee consisting o'f Miss Payton. Mrs. Cook, and Mrs. Mellsop go into the question of handicap managers. On the motion of Mrs. Guy Williams, seconded by Mrs. Marchbanks, it was decided that the inter-island match b« played in future on the day preceding the annual tournament, representatives to lie chosen solely on handicap. On the motion of Miss Anderson (Christchurch) it was decided to open the annual tournament on a Friday, competitors to have the freedom of tho links from the preceding Monday. Four clubs (Hamilton, Manawalu, Napier and Wanganui) offered their Knk» for fhe next meeting, tho voting going in favour of AVanganui. The date of tho home links’ coronation medal match was fixed for tho week beginning on tho second Mondav in May. The resignations of Miss Rattray, a* president, and Mrs. Mellsop, as honorary secretary and treasurer, were received with expressions of regret; and officials for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—President. Mrs. Mellsop; vice-pre-sidents. Mrs. George Bloomfield (Auckland), Mrs. Johns (New Plymouth'. Mrs. Grace (Wanganui', Alisn Bell (Wellington), Miss N. Johnston (Napier). Mrs. Robison (Nelson), Mrs. AVigram (Christchurch), Mrs. J. A. Cook (Dunedin', Mrs. Pottinger (Invercargill), Mrs. P. Kelly (honorary). Miss Greta Snow (Heretau’nga) was appointed secretary and treasurer. Tho scale of fees for tho ensuing year was fixed nt £1 10s. for clubs with membership up to 50; J!2 10s. for those with membership between 50 and 100: and -03 10s. for those with membership over 100.

HUTT CLUB Tho finals for tho senior and junior championships over 36 holes resulted as follow: — Seniors: J. L. Black beat R. O. Chesney, 9 up and S to play, his rounds being 74 and 72. juniors: E. P. Sealy boat J. Rainey, 6 up and 4 to play. The competition for tho silver button (bogey) was won by Rana Wagg (handicap 5), 6 up. The best six cards returned were Rana Wagg (5), 6 up; J. If. Wagg (6), 5 up: J. C. Wagg (18). 5 up; L. Speedy (5), 4 up; J. L. Black (1), 3 up; J. L. Clitnie (2), 3 up. A team from tho golf section of the Wellington Commercial Travellers Sports Club visited the links of the Hutt Golf Club to play their first match since -the inception of their club, and although they suffered a defeat it is hoped that this will bo tho initiation of many matches with Imttor results for them. Tho result was a win for the Hutt Golf Club, seven matches io one, with one halved. The individual results were as follow, Hutt players first:—L. Speedy won from K. Duncan ; R. Wagg halved with W. ’Whitehead: J. A. Biss lost to J. IT. Wagg; L. W. Bridge won from 0. J. Wilson ; J. Speedy won from G. Fulton ; — Reakes won from IT. M. Fraser. In tho four-ball matches L. Speedy and L. W. Bridge won from K. Duncan and 0. J. Wilson. R. Wagg and J. A,Bias won from J. IT. Wagg and W. Whitehead. J. Speedy and — Reakes won from G. Fulton and H. M. Fraser.
