PRISONERS ON STRIKE

PROTEST AGAINST SEARCH FOR CONTRABAND. Melbourne, October 10. The strike microbe has penetrated Pentridge Prison. Following upon a search of the cells for contraband, a large number of prisoners refused work as a protest against wnat. they claimed to bo a “humiliating system.” Prompt measures were taken to crush the revolt. At the subsequent inquiry 130 prisoners were charged with insubordination. The governor of the gaol pleaded for leniency for the majority, because they had boen coerced by the leaders. Sixty were sentenced to additional terms of imprisonment ranging from a week fo a month. — Press Assn.
