ST. MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS
NEW CHURCH TO BE OPENED TO-MORROW. The new church of St. Michael and All Angels, at Kelburn, is to be formally opened by the Bishop of Wellington at 11 a.m. to-morro>v. Dr. Sprott will then dedicate the altar but the church Itself cannot be dedicated owing to there being a debt upon it. The church is a red brick structure, designed by Mr. E. R. Wilson, of Invercargill (for whom Messrs. Crichton and M'Kay have been acting), and has been built by Mr. E. S. Knight, of Wellington. So far only a portion of the church has been completed, consisting of tho chancel, part of the nave, and the clergy vestyy. The rest of tho nave, the organ-chamber, and the square tower on the south side will be erected later. The interior timber work is of i selected oiled rirau, which is especially handsome. Tho font, which stands on ft dais in the entrance, is of grey Taknka marble, and was made by Messrs. Parkinson and Co., of Auckland. The money for tho font was raised solely by the Sunday School children over a term of years. The altar, of carved oak, was designed by Mr. Wilson and executed by Mr. F. G. Gurnsey, of Christchurch. It bears a fine cross of ebony and silver. The central window for the eastern sieje of the church (which will arrive from England in tho course of a few weeks) has been presented as a memorial to the late Mr. Edward Anderson, and one of the northern windows 'yet to arrive) has Loen presented by Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Gibbons as a memorial to their son who fell in the Great War. The total cost of the building and furnishings was over 416000, of which -C2500 is owing by way of mortgage. Tho remainder of the money was subscribed during the last five years. The church will seat at present just finder 200 people, but when completed there will bo provision for 869 worshippers. There will bo a service to-morrow evening, when the Rev. Archdeacon Watson will preach. The choir of St. Peter's —the mother parish—have kindly offered their services for that occasion. The Rev. Archdeacon Johnson will preside at" the evening service on Friday; the Rev. A. W. Payne (vicar) on Sunday morning, and'tho Bishop of Wellington on Sunday evening.
